Mcginn's Very Good Writeups Of Pro Scouts' Opinions On Players Is Out

For those that don't know, Bob McGinn writes for the milwaukee journal-sentinel, and is one of the most respected sports writers in the nation. Every year he writes a huge article on all the top talent based solely on what scouts have said about them to him. It's anonymous, and some of it is surely a smoke screen, but it's great to read nonetheless.

He's done wide receivers, tight ends, and offensive linemen.

So just a couple local guys, I'll let you all read the rest on your own.

Alshon Jeffrey

Third-year junior from Saint Matthews, S.C. "He is a gifted, gifted player," one scout said. "He's a move-the-chains type. He knows how to play the game. He will battle from Day 1 against physical corners. He's got a lot of confidence in his ability." Another scout said Jeffery had "the best downfield ball-snatching ability of any receiver in this draft." "The big body, the big frame, can make catches extended away from his body," a third scout said. "Those things are really exciting about the kid. Granted, you're not going to get that all the time. You've got to figure out if you've got the right coaching staff and you've got to get the kid to buy into your program. There's risk there, but there's a huge reward, too." Finished with 183 catches for 3,042 yards (second in SEC history) and 23 TDs. Had 10 on the Wonderlic. Tends to get way too heavy in the off-season. "He thinks he's entitled," a fourth scout said. "I don't think he has a driving passion for the game. He plays the game really hard but he doesn't do anything else hard. I don't think he trains well. He's soft." His prep basketball team won four straight state titles.

Brian Quick

Made a ton of spectacular, leaping catches. "He has the talent to be a very good No. 2," one scout said. Tremendous high school basketball player and played just one year of football. Finished with 202 catches for 3,418 yards (16.9) and 31 TDs. "Somebody will overpay for him because he's big, fast, athletic," the scout said. "But receiver is a hard position to come into the NFL and play initially, and he's a ways away. They kept it simple for him." Great hand-eye coordination. "He might be one of the more unready guys mentally," another scout said. "He's a little country simple. Doesn't really have a real support system that's used to this kind of limelight. It's going to be a struggle for him." From Columbia, S.C.

Can't say I agree with the Coby Fleener write-up. I watched far too many Stanford games last season to agree with this.

"

He might be the most overrated guy in the draft. He's awful as a blocker. Despite his workout numbers he's really not a quick-twitch, dynamic-moving guy. He's a straight-line, build-up player. All these reports about him being an athlete and this and that, they're assuming that because he ran fast. He's really just a red-zone, jump-ball player."

It just says "a scout" said this. Sounds like someone is trying to get him to drop to them in the 2nd. I may stand in the minority, but if Fleener is available at #40 and Jones or Perry aren't available, I'd take him. Big target opposite Greg Olsen in two tight end sets for Newton to abuse.

    • Two things: 1. Dr. Eric Eager is central to the draft process 2. I know that it was edited, but we didn't hear "Thieneman" one time, not even before the Vikings pick.
    • Why would he sign here as a guard when surely someone would sign him as a tackle?  Assuming he is healthy
    • Went back to watching the highlights. With a sober mind haha. Here is what I saw.    freddie needs to make 1 of those but the rest aren’t on him.    Slavin was BBBBAAAD again last night. Not sure what is going on with these game one Slavin gafs.    miller was ok but had his worst game in the playoffs so far.    nikishin was no good. His his awful turnover led to the first goal at the end of the first period that just can’t happen. ghost was beat like a drum multiple times last night, including the go-ahead goal at the end jarivs wont shoot. He is either hurt or he is struggling mentally and I think it could be a combination of both. He passed up a wide open net on the power-play only to pass it to no one and cleared it himself.     Svech played well. He is getting zero help on that line.    aho. Worst game as a pro. I mean that. He won’t shoot it, passes go to no one and turns it over repeatedly.  He did exactly what they did against Montreal game one when Miller had a turnover. Aho left his man to go help and left the golden Knight player wide open in front of Freddie.  If I was Rod, you Tell Aho when that thing hits your stick you fire it  someone needs to sit him down just him in a room and ask what’s going on. He seems soft, timid and has zero fire.   canes could have won that game   There isn’t a gap between these two teams  they are dead even   Carter Hart’s gonna get lit up in this series. We can beat that guy. the consensus last night was our defense played horrible and our stars won’t score.  clean the defense up. Tell the top line to shoot it everything and we’ll win tomorrow night.   Possibly convincingly.
