Brees may not be in camp!

Brees cap hit (franchise tag) is 16 million. They have 2.16 million left and still need to sign WR Nick Toon. They will have to do some restructuring to get him his $.

Shoot, I guess the articles I read were off. Good find.

The Saint's truly are screwed then. Even if they blow all their cap, they could only offer Brees $18 mil a year when he's asking for $20. That's great. Then if they backload his deal, he'll be counting towards $22-24 million against their cap in later years. Jeez, the Saints* are fuged.

What I hope happens is they Franchise him, he signs the tender. Sits out of Camp and comes back for the 4th preseason game. Everyone on the team hates his guts and the locker room is a mess. Then the following year he either walks or gets an even bigger deal. I just want maximum angst in the locker room. I have no doubts he will play, I just hope he gets a late start and the team is a mess by week 2.

I'm hoping we catch the Saints* early when the team is in chaos and then late when their season is over.

I may be wrong but I don't think Nick Toon could restructure for at least 3 years.

This doesn't get discussed enough regarding Brees' contract, but how will his teammates feel when the bill comes due and several of them start becoming casualty cuts? You know they'll all realize where their money and livelihoods are going to pay for, and that will mess up a lot of that "Saint Drew" image he has cultivated.

I'm thinking that this is the most likely scenario.

We better all pray that the Saints*** do NOT pay him what he wants either.

(not because he doesn't deserve it)

But because we will be in this same predicament with our Franchise QB after the 2015 season, assuming we:

a) don't sign him long term prior to then

B) pick up his option and pay him the avg of the top 5 QB's salaries in the League for the 2015 season

All imsaying is be careful how you're acting now, because Karma is a bitch...

Back to flaming the Saints**** and Breezy*

won't be at all the same situation mainly because of brees being a free agent acquisition who had been tagged previously and i can't see us waiting until time to tag to get a deal done.

Saints* are essentially writing the book on how not to deal with the QB that saved your franchise.

i think it also has a lot to do with brees just being a putz and a weasel of epic proportions...we just didn't know it.

First of all any long-term contract could fit under the cap for this year although as others have said, future years will put him well over 22 million a year.

Second, Brees will hold out because with Payton gone he really doesn't have a ton of motivation to play this year. Plus the last time he played under the tag he got hurt and almost ended his career.

Third- the holding points are the amount of guaranteed money and the length of contract since that is all that they can count on.

But then again isn't the rookie cap considered separate from the Veteran cap?

There is a rookie cap, but it is a subset of the overall cap, so yes, rookie money still counts against their cap.

The misconception may be due to how unsigned drafted rookies are handled under the cap. As soon as a player is drafted, they count against the cap at the rookie minimum, and it is only boosted to the actual number after they are signed.

    • The bad thing is that Xavier Legette kind of ignored the Jugs machine his rookie season. The good thing is that he's committed to it now. Catching is important to an NFL receiver (sarcasm), but, perhaps just as important is a receiver's---any player's---mindset.  "This offseason, the young wideout has gotten back to something in terms of preparation (Jugs machine). 'Oh man, it’s always been something I’ve done, and I don’t know why, but I felt like I could take a little breath,' explained Legette (via Darin Gantt of Panthers.com). 'And when you’re playing in this game, you can never do that. It’s always a way to get better, and that’s one of the ways to help with catching. For sure, for sure. In my mind, I’m thinking about ways, things I can do. What can I do to have less drops this coming season in Year 2? 'The whole mindset has changed, man,' added Legette. 'Trying to do anything I got to. I’m sacrificing a lot of things that I used to do outside of the building to put my work inside the building.'" https://www.si.com/nfl/panthers/xavier-legette-focused-on-reducing-drops-that-plagued-rookie-year-with-panthers-01k1692c0tz9 So, yeah, it wasn't good coming in taking some things for granted, but Legette is young. His mentality appears to have changed and he appears to be maturing and he's been putting in a lot of work by all accounts.  I know some of you are down on him, but I still have faith. Last season was a disjointed mess in its entirety, but there were still some flashes, particularly with route running. With Legette's seemingly better fit as the WR2, mindset and focus---doing his actual job catching the ball---he should be able to improve. Lastly, I'd like to add, props to Legette for being so open about the need to improve and change his mindset. Some guys wouldn't necessarily admit that publicly. If nothing else, he's honest and down-to-earth.
    • It is worth noting the fanbase has long held a love hate relationship with PFF over the years. Now that we are employing some of their people and actively using their data in our roster building approach going forward this should serve as the end all be all to any debate. This is either going to end really well or really bad. It's the Panthers. So save your energy and give it some time.
    • And to be honest, we weren't really talking about PFF grades either. I brought it into the conversation via a pic that's LLM-related (which apparently some Huddlers took issue with) as an aside for providing more specificity than just sheer numbers
