Give them the props: our DTs looked Good

This. Winning trench battles right now is more important than diagnosing the opponent's schemes. We wanted toughness at the point of attack and we saw that last night against their first team. How could anyone not have been pleased with that effort? Plus, it was a reflection of Rivera's message.

Not only this but Miami has an Oline that generally considered about as good as ours... in that top 10-5 range.

it was a decent performance against a mediocre offense with a rookie QB in his first start of his career. Let's keep things in perspective. I liked what I saw...don't get me wrong...OBVIOUSLY there is improvement and I don't want to take anything away from the DTs, they surprised and actually established something. Also, in terms of the whole line, CJ was a beast in this game regardless of the quality of the foe or the lack of game planning. If that continues then, we will most certainly be a much improved team.

However, it is not "negative nancy" territory to point out that Tannehill is a rookie starting in the NFL for the first time. We play Brees, both Mannings, Ryan, Rivers, Vick...I mean thats a far cry from R Tanehill...I'm sorry, but it is a huge difference. He held onto the ball a bit more than I'd expect from these pros, plus they are all better at blitz recognition and have good chemistry with their o-lines. Plus, the ability to game plan against our scheme and personnel.

There's no doubt that the defense showed us something in that game, and there is reason to believe that they will be more effective this season, but this was NOT the kind of performance that indicates that this DL has arrived. Still, it was a fantastic opportunity for them to gain some confidence and momentum.

I agree. I don't recall seeing the dline play like this last year preseason or not. They did the pushing in this game instead of being pushed around. Hopefully this game is something they can build off and start believing in themselves.

The last two weeks we have matched up CJ on the RT and Hardy on the LT. I wonder if this is a season long switch or very situational. Ideally you want your best pass rusher on the blind side but maybe we are conceding the left for a good match up on the right.

Yeah you are correct. Ideally that is how pass rushers lines up, but last year Hardy typically lined up against the left tackle (blind side) and CJ the right tackle. If I remember correctly they chose this approach because Hardy was supposed to have a quick first step. I don't necessarily think that is the case with the additional weight. On the positive side if Miami had their perennial pro bowler in, Jake Long, that was the reason Hardy may have been quiet on the blind side.

I give McClain a hard time on here, mainly because I expect more from him. My hat is off to the guy, played the run well, held his ground, and got into the backfield against MIA. He looked like a decent NFL player for the first time and he has the physical abilities to greatly improve.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
