What does everyone think about the D

i'm not worried. it looked better than it did at any point last year regardless of how piss-poor an offense it is they were playing (which the jets were playing better than they have the past couple weeks). people were worried about holmes, but he wasn't a factor. hill was the only WR that had multiple catches and most of his yardage came on one pass that gamble actually covered him well on and sanchez just happened to make a smart play and underthrow it to him.

people talk about how we got torched and made that jets offense look good, but when you look at the numbers, that just isn't the case. the panthers D just didn't leave them with many opportunities and when the jets were given opportunities, the defense did it's job. it held and kept them to a FG.

The Golden Calf of Bristol was given more for his highlight reel? when in the game was it? 2nd half? where were our starters? who was on the field? meh....The Golden Calf of Bristol made "better" D's look like garbage last year. was The Golden Calf of Bristol able to get into the endzone? what happened when he got fired up? was he "The Golden Calf of Bristol the conqueror"? nope. the panthers D shut him down.

this defense isn't horrible. mcD isn't a bad DC. they have things scaled back. doesn't matter if other teams aren't, this team isn't showing everything it's got mainly because in the first four weeks it's got games against every divisional rival. they've looked decent and they are doing it with beason still on the sideline.

this may not be a top 10 D right now, but it most certainly is a D that we can win with and it's only going to be getting better. if you are too scared to have faith in what they are doing...just sit tight or keep bitching about how we still suck, i don't care. this defense is much improved, though, and it will get better. i'm not worried about it and i'm not sure why anyone would be freaking out or even be upset over how they did last night. they were solid and they did what they were supposed to do...keep the other team out of the end zone. THAT is all that matters.

we allowed what, 6 points off 2 turnovers?

eh, not the best showing but they made some definite improvements, especially to the run D. To prevent any team from scoring a TD, particularly when they get the ball so close to the goal line, is a good thing imo.

to the posters concerned about our line play should keep in mind that the jets have 3 pro bowl caliber players on their o line. the giants didn't destroy their entire o line they just took advantage of a guy who looks like he doesn't belong in the nfl period

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet because honestly I didn't sift through every page but let me say one thing about the secondary. Whenever a QB (any professional QB) can drop back with no pressure to speak of and is allowed to step in a throw and allowed to take time to find an open receiver, no cornerback, safety, or linebacker can cover the receivers. The problem with the defense right now is a lack of pass rush, plain and simple. Even mediocre corners and safeties can look good when the defensive line can get pressure or hurry throws. I watched Sanchez drop back and just stand there and make good throws, I also watched Schaub do the same thing in game one. Preseason doesn't matter but pass rush does. Maybe they aren't stunting or taking it easy so maybe it isn't a big deal but I can guarantee that we'll know within the first two or three drives against Tampa how bad it will be.

Edit: Ok this has been mentioned, and quite often. But the point stands.

not that bad considering we didn't really play our starting DTs or show any real blitzing that's actually a legit part of our schemes.

i'm not concerned. we won't be great but we'll be ok, and that's an improvement.

We aren't what we haven't done. We aren't a JJ43 blitzing scheme until they actually are one....

At this point, not sure we are going to be that.

So we wont be running a JJ43, because we didn't use a lot of it in a preseason game??? Guess our offense wont be different, than we've shown so far in preseason either???

No, but we are playing a very vanilla D right now with very little stunts. 4 man basic front the majority of the time.

A team as young as we are should be practicing these stunts And blitz packages. "Saving it for the regular season" is good for week 1. After week 1 the D is on film. Holding back and saving stuff for the season is an offensive move. Our D needs to practice what they will be playing.
