Gimmick Run Plays

Why does Carolina use so many gimmick run plays? Just about every other team lines up in standard formations with the same and or better results. Is there a deficiency in the Oline they are trying to conceal? Is there such thing as having too many run options on a play. I would tend to think that if the oline knows where the ball carrier is going, they can open a better hole.

Because in most playbooks they have runs that are really only designed to get 3-7 yards. Chud thinks all of his should go the distance.

Why go with something that's proven, when you can be "innovative?"

It's better to be considered a genius and win 7 of 20 games than win doing the cliché traditional offense. If only style points counted. The added bonus is that it might delay the development of your young QB!

They're trying to use Cam's running ability to give the opposing D something else to worry about... but I agree, you can't run the option read every damn time. Sometimes you out trick yourself...

The ATL game was much better imo in terms of offensive play calling (until the last two series anyway)...

nah they brought tolbert in to try and catch 30 yard passes. Sigh. the game plan of the offseason was solid, its just not translating to the field.

Yeah I heard them say Sunday that Rivera wanted the team identity to be run the ball and play defense. I thought to myself, he needs to relate that Chud before everyone starts thinking we are a passing team. I been saying all this year that they need to go with some power running formations and quit messing with that Tolbert as a wide-out mularkey.

It is a zone blocking scheme, the olineman rarely know exactly where the runner will end up going. they have an area to create a hole and it is up to the back to hit it or not

The read-option is not a "gimmick" play.

I agree that I'd like to see us make more use of standard running formations but I disagree with calling the read-option a gimmick. It's not the best call for every down but it's certainly not like a double reverse or something goofy like that.

i really am tired of seeing the option so many times. i understand that it can be good and work out sometimes. when it's used so many times defenses pick up on it and can shut it down easily be cause it takes longer to develop.

It's time to become a more passing oriented team and letting any and all kinds of non-scramble runs be there for the sole purpose of keeping the defense honest.
