Observer article regarding Rivera/GM

Regarding Richardson...

After Hurney’s dismissal, Richardson told Rivera he wanted to see the team trend upward over the final 10 weeks of the season. The Panthers were 6-4 after Hurney’s firing, and finished the season on a strong note for the second consecutive year.

The Panthers won five of their past six games to finish 7-9 and in second place in the NFC South, a game better than Rivera’s first season. They ended the season with the franchise’s first four-game winning streak since 2008, the last time the Panthers made the playoffs.

If that is what he goes by, then it'll be no shock if Rivera stays.

Also saw this...

Through a team spokesman, Richardson declined comment Wednesday. The 76-year-old owner has not commented publicly since firing GM Marty Hurney in October.

I wonder how many times the phrase "Richardson declined comment" has been written concerning the Panthers.

Common sense would probably tell you that Rivera ends up staying because we looked like we was trending upward. If JR bring Rivera back that would be a mistake and might ultimately hurt his chances at getting a pretty good GM. History tells us that most General managers really want their own guy to come in and be the man. Rivera staying could lead to Brandon Beane being the next Panthers GM.

Mediocrity here we come!

Would you really turn down a GM job if you were told that they're giving the current coach 1 more year to prove himself or he's gone? Because that is probably what JR is saying. Rivera has 1 year to have a winning and make the playoffs or he's done. Don't see that holding a GM prospect back

I don't understand why people assume Rivera staying = Beane staying. The Bears hired new GM Phil Emery last year and kept Lovie Smith, so it's not like you can't retain an existing coach and not be able to hire an outside GM.

But the new GM wasn't going to come in and just fire Lovie Smith right out of the gate. Do you know how much heat he would've took for that? Look at the heat he is taking this year just by letting Lovie go. Hiring a nee GM ultimately lead to Lovie Smith getting fired though. Most General managers want their own guy.

sad that mediocrity is a step up from where we've been the past few years.

oh the joy of being a fan of a team that aspires to being average.

    • It's definitely a historical issue at QB but to be perfectly blunt, we also don't do a good job of really developing almost any position if you look at the last decade or so. I tend to be on the side of that being far less a development issue than an evaluation deficiency.  I think we are in the situation at QB2/3 recently due to the overall roster being absolutely abhorrent and the QB classes being quite thin. It is harder to justify another Matt Corral(or several) when you can potentially get a real two deep contributor at other positions.  But, it was a lot of hard work to get to the point where are roster is so incredibly bad that luxury picks literally are not in our vocabulary.  This is the reaping what you sow portion of our history.
    • That is what I meant about our front office. They are like someone filling out a March Madness bracket based on preference of uniform colors and mascots. There's no rhyme of reason to some of these fugg'n mind numbing decisions they make.  They go all in on these flimsy-@ss prospects and are gun shy when it comes to more solid prospects.  It's literally maddening and the reason I stopped being so emotionally involved in this team. Heck the only reason I'm active on the board today is one, it's my day off and two, it's cut down time.
