One Year Deals

How should we perceive these 1 year deals? Is Gettlemen scared to make any long term commitments to a player that may not pan out? Is Gettlemen not conviced about Rivera but is going to give him what he needs to be successful this year? Is this some ultimatum from JR to not give out any crazy Hurney type contracts? If Carolina does well and gets to the playoffs, they will be looking at one hell of a long free agent list. If the chemistry worked and got you to the playoffs your looking at having to resign these players who played well for 1 year and will likely want more money now that they proved their worth. Its going to be very interesting. What do you think?

A one year deal right now makes the most sense for a number of reasons:

1. Next years salary cap might be in worse shape than 2013's cap for us. Signing players to 1 year deals allows us to pick and choose next year who will be worth the further investment

2. We are not taking chances on having any more "dead money" accured on our books. The fact that we are still paying players who are no longer on the team. I remember a point in 2010 when Hurney had $30 million tied up in “dead money’’.

    • I honestly can’t believe this team’s turnaround this season. It’s surreal. Figured healthy we’d be fringe playoffs and with another lottery pick could finally turn the corner, but we don’t even need that. This group is ready. We haven’t played remotely well the last 5 games and yet still blew out 5 bad teams by 16+ each game like it was casual practice. We had a few solid teams with Kemba and Big Al but this is easily our best group since the original Hornets moved to NO. Man, what a shift in culture this new ownership group and front office has brought. So damn happy to see it after years of suffering and consistently meaningless games in this stretch of previous seasons.   Only 2.5 games out of the 6 seed, although Miami, Atlanta and Orlando have been playing well too. Gonna be a fun final stretch, hopefully we can get a top 8 seed at the very least. Celtics tomorrow will be a good test. Would be huge to keep the road winning streak up against a very hot top team on the 2nd half of a back to back. We’ve played Boston pretty well the last few years with much of this same group despite sucking so I do feel pretty good about it. Kon is due for a huge game coming off a few cold shooting games (although despite the poor shooting he’s been contributing well with defense, assists and rebounds).
    • It amazes me how underrated Horn has become after he finally was able to stay on the field. Sure last year wasn’t perfect but he was still a huge reason for our rebound defensively and I’d say he’s easily a top 10 corner. You don’t want to see Mike Jackson as our top corner. Any player is available for the right price but I’d be extremely hesitant to move Horn even for a big haul from LA.
