points on twitter from an interview on the drive. and then later comments from his own twitter feed.

Brooks: "For the Panthers to win the divsion, Cam Newton has to play at a high level and he's got to get some support from his teammates."

Brooks: "What putting Steve Smith in the slot does, is it breaks up the chance of him getting double teamed."

Brooks on moving Steve Smith into the slot: "I'm suprised it has taken the Panthers this long to put him in the slot."

Brooks: "I think moving Steve Smith to the slot will not only be beneficial to Steve, but will be great for Cam Newton and helping him."

It's interesting that the @Panthers GM is calling out Cam Newton for his W/L record when the team hasn't surrounded him w/top off. talent

The @Panthers are still looking for a No.2 WR to complement Smith and Olsen is the only other established option in pass game.

Lastly, J.Stewart and D.Williams are upper echelon RBs, but team rarely gives them 30-35 combine carries.

Seems everyone should pay attention to the "elephant in the room", not just the QB..

Before fans counter with Andrew Luck leading the @Colts back to prominence, look at how the team drafted offensive playmakers around him..

In a QB-driven league, it's important to draft and build with the QB in mind.. Just look at how the consistent contenders are built

couple interesting thoughts from gantt re: brooks statements as well,

Interesting reading @BuckyBrooks comments on Panthers offensive personnel, since he used to work for them. Points to coaching, not players.

Honestly, I think Brandon LaFell is all the second WR a team with 89-Olsen-their RBs needs. But you have to put them in the right places.

@daringantt LaFell has been grossly misused as a deep threat when he should be a 10-12 yard possession guy

Guy responsible got head coaching gig RT @BuckyBrooks: Stewart & Williams are upper echelon RBs, but team rarely gives them 30-35 carries.

@daringantt the man who "developed" Cam also made things much more complicated than they should've been. But...#GoBrowns!

kind of interesting stuff going on. i agree about smitty in the slot. been a long time coming. i also agree about lafell being misused a bit and i put a lot of that on chud not caring who is on the field, what they were or weren't capable of, and the situation at hand when he called plays.

i also agree that they haven't done a great job building around cam, either. the right side of the line can't be taken seriously and neither can that WR corps sans smitty. smith makes them respectable. you take him out and you have average at best.

I was going to mention this in the Gettleman thread, but I didn't feel like posting it... to be honest, Gettleman's comments kind of pissed me off. Cam was often the only reason we won games over the last two years. He's not the problem. The only thing that I've thought he needs to improve on is his in-game demeanor...

Look at the Atlanta games last season...

First game, only reason offensively we were in it was because of Cam. Yes, he lost the ball late and regained it, but he wasn't getting any help. Then, our genius coach decides to punt on 4th and 1 near midfield. And what do you know? A "supporting cast" member gives up an unimaginable pass to seal our fate.

Second game versus Atlanta, the supporting cast shows up and Cam shows out. We win.

As the old adage goes, the QB always get too much credit when things go right, and they get too much blame when things go wrong. Cam is fine... Gettleman needs to be looking elsewhere. *ahem* WR! OL!

And as you saw with all of the other young QBs out there that have won, what did their teams do? Dalton, RG3, Luck... they all were given numerous weapons upon their arrival. Give Cam any of their teams and he'd be sitting in the same position they are. Quick, tell me how many of those teams invested heavily in RBs with those QBs...

Again, the problem isn't Cam.

LaFell isn't a Victor Cruz level WR-2, but he's certainly good enough given the attention Smith and Olsen get. I don't get the LaFell hate- I think he's pregressed very nicely from his rookie season until now.

Agree with the comments about Smith in the slot, several of us on here have been wondering why they haven't done that WAY more in the past. Seems like a huge advantage for Smith inside.

I'd be interested to see LaFell's numbers vs. the avg. numbers for #2 wideouts across the league. I'd like to do the same for Olsen's #'s against TE1 averages across the league.

It seems like people think Isaac Bruce/Torry Holt, Larry Fitz/Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith/Muhsin Muhammed receiver combinations are commonplace when that's simply not true. I could be wrong, but am too lazy to look up the numbers that would either strengthen or crumble my argument.

G-man better hope that his boys, Hixon and Ginn, step up.  It is painfully obvious---painfully---that we have been an incomplete, broken-winged offense for years.  G-man doubled up on DTs as opposed to grabbing a WR. Now I am not saying that he shouldn't have done that, but (at the same time) he needs to afford Cam another year before he calls him out to such a degree.

Everyone needs to keep expectations in check.

Lafell isn't a problem. He is a productive player. The problem is once we get a good player at one position on the field we feel satisfied that's enough... See Smitty. We rely way too heavily on a few key players, and in the past we neglected the talent base around them as a result.

I did those numbers pre-draft (don't have'em handy anymore).

Lafell is square in the middle of #2 WRs in the league.

I agree in the past.

But, watching Gettlemen bring in Ginn/Hixon and draft Barner....I think those days are over.

This WR corp is better than most are giving credit.

No doubt, this is the deepest talent base I remember having in many, many years... but, I'm just saying Gettleman is kind of putting the cart before the horse if he hasn't looked at our personnel philosophies from Cam's first two years and prior.

Unlike the myth of Gettis, we know what we have in LaFell. I don't get why people are always trying to make him out to be more than he is. He has shown us what he is: a receiver that can make some great plays at times, but also one that disappears for games at a time. Now I do give credence to the argument that perhaps he is being used in an incorrect manner, but being that we still seem to be missing something at WR, LaFell is going to be in the same position.
