Panthers D struggles against the Slant!

Good safety play will make or break the slant route. We will see it a whole lot more and also the screen but if our safetys can tackle and cover that will allow us to bump the WRs and stop the slant route. Also good zone coverage can be effective on slants and I'm sure we will use that as well.

Worth noting....Bears weren't even practicing with there stud WR.

I know 89 got tired of watching it over and over ..he was caught yelling stop the %*!,!:' slants

Also, Carolina does some basic scouting now.....Chicago throws slants all day. Our guys were likely expected to do a little better than they did against those slants .

The slant is a glorified running play. Against our front 4, we should see it a lot.

Our philosophy is to keep the play in front of you, limit the big plays, and force the O to be methodical in moving the ball. Most teams are not built for this. They tend to get antsy and go away from this approach. Which can lead to mistakes. Quick plays like slants keeps the front 4 off your QB. It may keep your QB safe, but it takes forever to move the ball.

I did however, see a discrepancy in who jammed a WR and who didn't. Whether this is by design, or not, I have no clue. I personally like to see the DB jam a WR. It can throw off the timing of the play. It can also be a disaster if you miss the jam. Hence, some DBs jam, and some don't.

To everyone freaking about the slant, you need to remember Trestman's background in the CFL: they use much more quick passing then the typical NFL team. Our corners will have to work on their hand placement in press coverage but they've got good film on it.

Worth remembering his background in the NFL also. Trestman is a dyed in the wool WCO guy.

With all that in mind, a heavy focus on quick, high-percentage passes should shock no one.

    • I think you mean relevant but they have been fine, the problem is the lack of in game adjustments.  He has also been just decent at recruiting.  Duke having tons of success hurts and just fine isn’t good enough at UNC.
    • I don't see it as drafting a premium player to sit and wait if Walker gets hurt. We need a legitimate swing T. Unless you have a Sewell or Slater type tackle that is pretty much a sure thing, these guys can need some time to develop year 1 just like a QB ideally should. They all haven't played the elite 5 star talent on the edge. If we think another franchise tackle has dropped to us at 19, you have to pull the trigger. The position is just too damn hard to find. If it's just a "we need a tackle and this guy has a T on the board", yeah, move on, take one in the later rounds. But if that guy is there, let him back up and learn a year, then slide him into LT on year 2 of his rookie deal.  I don't see us being able to offer Walker a multi year contract after a prove it year, pay Moton his final almost fully guaranteed year, Hunt, Lewis a center and do a 50-60m extension for Bryce. The 3 most important positions on the field are QB, blindside tackle (usually LT), and edge rusher. Those are the premium positions that cost the most and are hardest to come by. If a starting caliber talent is there at 19 you have to pull the trigger.  I understand the need for a DT and S. I've been on the C and FS train for years. If we weren't staring at a potential Bryce extension, it'd make the decision a lot easier I think. It's just with all these huge contracts I don't see how we can hedge our bets on being able or even wanting to re-sign Walker, especially if he has a bad year. Icky and BC's injuries really hurt our long term plans.  If no blue chip talent at those 3 key positions are available at 19, by all means pass and draft another position. But I think it's pretty safe to say we don't have a guaranteed lock at any of them right now beyond Phillips, and they have to be somewhat of a priority.
    • Not completely accurate. I'm sure Roy is lobbying for him and Larry Brown has spoke put in support too. But Hansbrough has made comments pretty critical and hinting at a need for change. Joel Berry has gone a step further and said the standard has not been met. Scott Williams who was a teammate of Hubert's at Carolina has gone all the way and said it's time for a change at head coach.
