Vanilla Offense in Preseason

Recommended Posts

Most teams run a relatively simple offense and defense in preseason.  We are hardly alone in this and its why we shouldn't get to caught up in preseason numbers.

Fwiw, I am not really concerned about the poor performance in preseason.  I am concerned that our offense looked crappy for the first half of last year, until we started playing weaker teams.  I would still have the same concern even if we were averaging 50 points a game in preseason.  Hopefully, after about 3-4 regular season games, that will no longer be a concern.

When you watch teams who are predicted to make the playoffs (Sea, SF, Den, NE, GB, Hou, Atl, Cin) they all look like they are ready to start the season tomorrow. Whether they're running "vanilla" or "complex" they are executing like they're expected to by their coaches.

If we want to run down a simplified offense, fine. But the players (specifically the starters) need to show they our capable of running such a simple scheme.

There's a difference between just running vanilla/not being flashy and lack of effort and execution.

I'm still optimistic about the season. I like the team we have. I'd just like to see a little more effort.

Several of those teams you listed have looked pretty bad this week.  Denver got thrashed and neither SF or Green Bay got a td until the 4th qtr. None of the three looked ready to start the season.

Does running a Vanilla offense mean that your OLineman do not have blocking assignments? If so, then I am good. I personally would rather run a flavor where lineman put a hat on someone and didn't act like they did not understand their job

SF hasn't scored a TD yet, Denver got destroyed last night and didn't show much the first week, GB looked very shaky against the Cards last week (albeit, better against the Rams), and the Falcons 1st team D looks like Swiss Cheese.

Just because they might be able to put one or two drives together doesn't mean they're ready for the season yet. No one is. It's preseason...everyone is going to look shaky and some look less shaky than others (like CLE, BUF,CIN, and SEA). Every team has their own separate agenda which will affect their plan of action through these first four weeks. That's why no one should be trying to correlate anything at this point.

I will agree with you on the effort deal, though. If we're going to look like spanked ass, might as well try hard looking like spanked ass. Making mistakes is acceptable right now and possibly (dare I say), encouraged to some degree. But the entire team as a whole against Philly looked flat and if the whole team is like that, there's really not a whole lot you can teach and improve.

We were actually warned by Zod that this vanilla garbage O would happen. We could have tried fo Hue Jackson, we could have tried for Norv Turner. We chose Shula.

Oh and save me the "NEED TO KEEP USING SAME OFFENSE SO CONSISTENCYyyyyyyyyyyyyyY"

You tell me Norv can't find a scheme that Cam would have thrived it.

Um, Rivera barely kept his job....like Fox late he was limited in what he could offer any coach.

We run Norv's scheme. Norv isn't going to take a one year deal to come here when he could sign a nice deal in Clev.

I will reserve any opinions until the rubber hits the road. Can they pull their collective heads out of arz in two weeks? I don't know why they are not executing , is it talent? Is it coaching? Vanilla preseason mean nothing games? We will know sept 8 what the truth is, until then its all speculation on what they are going to be.
