Cam Newton contract extension?

Happy Panther

Recommended Posts

Historically it has been assumed that we sign Cam to a lucrative extension as soon as the bargaining agreement allows it. I believe this would be at the end of this season, so around February?

With Gettleman here and Rivera potentially gone things could be a little different. I assume we would still keep sign a new contract, it just wouldn't be as big as we all thought unless he rebounds this year. I can't imagine we want him testing free agency no matter how he does. I can't recall the last time a franchise QB wasn't locked up ASAP.

Or do we let him ride out his contract before doing anything?

I cant see Newton in any position to demand some sort of huge salary if he plays out the rest of the season like he has started it.

Newton will still be off to historical offensive production 3 years into a NFL career....

Only thing he doesn't have is wins in the win column. Team sport. His offensive production is still at a historical pace....

That gets overlooked in the national media. They simply focus on the losses.....not why he has so few wins

I think Cam will wait. It wont be made public(or maybe it will), but I don't see him wanting to sign anything long term in such a shaky situation. The smart thing for both sides will be to wait.

I personally think Cam IS the answer at QB, but I'm not sure Gettleman does. JR said Cam would be his last QB so it will be interesting to see what happens.

Cam, I hope, would not be dumb enough to even entertain an extension or anything else until he's a free agent. Let's not forget that he was the victim of the new rookie contract structure and will make more money in his second contract.

That being said, the guy wants to win and this team shows little desire to build a winning attitude, a winning tradition and a winning team. Cam is in the driver's seat here, the Panthers have to provide all the reasons for him to stay.

Cam is in his third year of a four year contract with a team option for a fifth year. So that leaves two years on the contract plus at least one year with a franchise tag. The team is sitting on at least another year or two before they really need to get a deal done. I think unless they agree upon a really good deal for the team we wont see a deal done this year.

    • You’re playing madden we’re talking real football stuff…. He does have you seen his special on internet he def thinks he’s getting paid
    • Without the team having an identity kinda hard to predict what they value.  They either are really trying to build a balanced team, or preparing for another swing at qb if Bryce doesn’t pan out. Seems like we value the o line but the $ spent there has been underwhelming besides Lewis, you could say it’s because of injuries but still hasn’t been worth the investment. as already stated, the whole handling of Bryce young as a whole has been ass backwards, we spent the years we’re supposed to take advantage of having a qb with a lower cap hit, building the team up to be adequate. now It appears, key word appears, the saints have done it correctly, which is painful to even think about. Regardless, I hope the front office has paid attention to qb contracts recently, such as Tua, Kyler, Daniel jones(pre colts) and don’t settle for subpar qb play at franchise qb rates
    • This is the flaw in your logic.  Cutting 3 of our best players will somehow move us from whatever we are to "compete". Even the most Young super fans are not predicting a ceiling above top 10-12, and that will not nearly cut it.  Someone will need to break the log jam of QBs getting nothing or North of 50. Our qb is at best a middle ground, lets hope it will be us that also manage to pay the worth at about 100 over 3 years.  And before you jump me, yes that is only of he improves.
