Laying the Black Helmet Idea to Rest

unless carolina switches to it entirely, there will be no alternate helmets.

An NFL committee on head, neck and spine safety recommended to the league that teams no longer use alternate helmets.

"Our Head, Neck, and Spine Committee, chaired by Drs. Hunt Batjer and Richard Ellenbogen, and the Player Safety Advisory Panel, chaired by John Madden and Ronnie Lott, have recommended that players no longer wear different helmets as part of a ‘Throwback’ or ‘Third’ uniform,” the memo from the league office, obtained by ProFootballTalk.com, said. “Our office supports this change and has reviewed it with the chairman of our Health and Safety ownership committee, Dr. John York, who concurs with this recommendation."

The rule was made public Tuesday afternoon after it was revealed Tampa Bay would not be allowed to wear its Bucco Bruce helmet with its throwback 'Creamsicle' uniforms.

That means, since Carolina wears silver helmets, the black Panthers helmet that fans have long yearned for won't be happening any time soon, if it was ever in the works in the first place.
