Did the Panthers hire the wrong guy?

If we hire another defensive coordinator, I'm taking a vacation from this team. I don't want to watch Cam's career to spiral down into nothingness.

Worth remembering...

Bill Belichick cut his teeth as a DC.  So did Pete Carroll.

Some of the league's most potent offenses - the Patriots, Falcons and Broncos to name a few - operate under defensive head coaches.

The point of a coaching search is to find the right guy.  And yes, that guy can be a DC.

Won't Gettleman have some say as to who we interview? I have a feeling JR trusts Gettleman. So hopefully he knows what he is doing.

Richardson let Marty Hurney run the last search without interfering.  No reason to think he won't extend the same courtesy to Gettleman.

Worth noting on that front: Anyone expecting Gettleman to consider a college coach running a read-option type attack might wanna take a look back at the feelings Gettleman has expressed about the Read option offense.  He is most definitely not a fan.

absolutely true, but the problem is jerry seems to think the guy can't be an OC (or offensive-minded coach) and thus limits the pool of candidates. he categorically removes potential all-stars because they don't fit his archaic football framework. that's why it's frustrating.

I know there's a reason Jerry prefers defensive head coaches. From what I can remember, I think it's just a philosophy thing (which is a tad ironic given that Richardson was on offense in his playing days). If there's something more specific as to why, I've forgotten it.

One thing I do remember: it goes way back. When things were just getting started, Bill Polian talked up having a wide open offensive philosophy. His rationale was that if we were gonna lose games as an expansion team, we might as well at least make it fun to watch. Obviously, he was overruled on that front, though the word was that Jerry's first choice for head coach was Joe Gibbs.

If it goes all the way back to the Polian days, you gotta figure it runs deep.

I have never really bought the concept of head coaches being "offense guys" or "defense guys". True as it may be that head coaches have the final say on playcalling, a lot of head guys around the league don't get in the way of great coordinators. The problem in Carolina is that we've never really had even adequate coordinators with rare exception. A lot of us still pine for Jack Del Rio's defense from 2002 but who can we say other than Del Rio has been a star at the offensive coordinator position? Chud? Prior to Chud we had Jeff Davidson and Dan Henning for a decade.

Take for example John Fox and the dreaded "foxball era", we had here. Last year the Broncos had the 5th best offense in the NFL and this year they have the 2nd. He trusted Mike McCoy to make his own calls and they passed the ball 585 times. Much different than the 3 yards and a cloud of dust first and second downs we had here. So far this year even with McCoy's departure, they're sitting at 45 points per game through the first two games.

There has to be trust all the way down the line in the system. Carolina going with old time football guys who defer to the head coach on all matters is giving the head coach too much to think about. That's why I think the dynamic with Chud worked well here, because he had his own plans and he called what he thought would work and Rivera wasn't meddlesome. Now we have the best offense on paper we've had in a while and to the surprise of nobody Mike Shula can't make heads or tails of it. He has taken Cam's best asset, his improvisational running, and neutered him. Cam the past two seasons has averaged 50 first downs per season and this year he only has 4 so far and is getting about half as many carries. The reason that "option QB's", have never worked in the NFL before this recent fad came about was that coaches of Shula's era always attempted to make them pocket quarterbacks and thereby negated their strengths. The ideology of you'll never be a true QB until you drop back 30 times a game has died in this league but there are people out there still trying to keep it alive. The dinosaurs. We have one running our offense. Love him or hate him, Chud entirely disregarded the fact that Cam wasn't as strong in the pocket as other QB's and creatively called plays that allowed him to utilize his very particular set of skills. We don't have that anymore.

With that said, Rivera has done an awful job with the lead in football games. And a lot of that has to do with the fact that when we had the lead in close games down the stretch, our playcalling would change entirely. It was like a flip was switched to shut off the power. We started playing boring grind-the-clock football and we're not equipped to play that style. We don't have a back that can get 4 yards a touch in those situations. We're just as likely to lose yards as gain them between the tackles. Now, with Shula, we're playing that style of football for 4 quarters instead of exclusively with the lead. And we wonder what's going wrong?

I want the next hire we make to have limited control over his coordinators. I want the coordinators to do their jobs and be accountable. I want us to give them enough power to keep them here. We have most of the pieces we need on the field, we just need the play calls to match the talent.

I want the best candidate for the job DC or OC or whatever. But the one thing this organisation really need is a spark of energy. We need a name for our next HC a guy who bring some hype and momentum with him.

I am tired of beeing a fan of a shitty team with no balls. If you do not have to balls to think big you will never win in this league. I cant really think of the last time this organisation did something gutsy, allways doing the "safe" thing, we took Cam in the draft and have made him a boring no gutsy QB who run a boring offensive scheme, the one fuging time we take a chance we are ruining it with a "safe" no balls OC.

I want a name for a HC, I want a big FA signing, I want a big trade I want any fuging thing who can get some hype to this sorry ass organisation.

    • The bottom line is we saw long stretches this season where T-Mac wasn't even targeted.  He had games where he went an entire half without seeing a pass thrown his way, and it lead to a bunch of games with 5 or less targets.  If he's healthy and we're not up a stupid amount and only running the ball, I can't see him having more than a game or two next year with 5 or less targets. We were also only 22nd this year in pass attempts, and that was with a rookie #1 and no legitimate 2nd option for half the season.  And even then, we were only 46 pass attempts above 31st place. If we go into next season with T-Mac improved in his 2nd season and a healthy Coker for 17 games, there is absolutely no reason for us to not throw it more.  That right away increases both of their target totals without sacrificing any targets from each other or other players, add in them taking targets from the TEs and RBs on top of that, and your argument just doesn't hold water anymore. You can't look at targets/yards in a vacuum and think next year Coker just takes some from T-Mac.  You have to look at the team as a whole and our situations this year and then project what will happen next year. If he's healthy for 17 games, I'd bet my life savings that T-Mac sees increases across the board, targets/catches/yards/TDs.   Just as Coker will also see career highs in all categories, it's not one vs the other, it's shifting offensive strategy given our personnel, which next year will be much better for our passing game (QB issues aside).
    • C'mon now.... First, you can't switch up your argument once someone points out a major flaw in your point. You're saying we shouldn't expect a big increase in targets/yards for T-Mac, but then shift to talking about averages with Chase when I point out the significant leap he took there once you factor in his missing games.  He saw an increase in targets in 5 less games, averages aside, he saw a significant increase in targets in his 2nd season, what he then did with those targets is actually irrelevant in this discussion. Puka seeing no increase is pointless, as he saw such an absurd amount of targets for a rookie, it's near impossible to see an increase. But the real issue in this post is that you think I'm proving your point by showing how Waddle had to share targets with Hill. Tyreek Hill was a 1st team All Pro who was 2nd in the NFL in yards that season. If you think Jaylen Waddle sharing targets with a 1st team All Pro and a future HOFer is even remotely in the same category as T-Mac needing to share targets with Coker... then you are certifiably insane, lol. If anything, you could make the argument that Coker is to Waddle as T-Mac is to Hill in that discussion (which would then lead to a serious increase in targets/yards for T-Mac).  But even that is insane, as neither T-Mac or Coker will be as good as Hill and Waddle respectively that season.  I love both of their potential, but c'mon now, T-Mac isn't getting 119 catches for 1,700 yards and Coker isn't getting 117 for 1,350 next season.
