Least/2d Least Penalties in the League

Recommended Posts

Not a lot has been said this year about the discipline that has been shown on the field by this football team.

Last year we were middle of the pack. In 2011 we were at the bottom of the barrel. We bitched, whined, pointed fingers. But now, now that we haven't been giving up free yardage, just like the absence of penalties, there has been an absence of praising ol' Ron's improvement in this area.

Here's a link showing penalty stats for the last 6 years or so:

You can manipulate it any way you like, so I didn't want to put "least penalized team" outright, but we are definitely at the top of the NFL.

If we keep this up, the wins should start coming.

Cheers

And they probably have the most penalties and general fug ups on special teams. Those insane running out of bounds penalties were ridiculous. That shouldn't be a rule.

Yep.

What blows my mind is our players have been hit by the punt TWICE in 3 games causing a change in possession. Twice! That's cray.

Without it a player could run untouched out of bounds down the sideline and make every special teams punt tackle tackle.

i thought we'd have a whole lot more offensive holding and defensive PIs by now.

Hey if you just jinxed us I'm going to have a hot air balloon made in the likeness of Alicejandra and I'm going to find out where you live, hover over your house, and drop leaflets in your lawn that contain Alice's best quotes on fashion advice, dieting tips, and advice on spending way too much on tie-dye Air Jordan's.

The main issue for me, is that our penalties always seem to come at the worst possible times. Luke's BS PI call in Buffalo for instance.  The lack of penalties should be applauded, but in crunch time it's almost as if everyone from RR on down the chain goes full retard.

However, maybe it's just me remembering some games incorrectly

teams may start intentionally kicking short.....takes Ginn out of a return and potential for clusterflucks

Yeah, there still have been some huge, game-changing penalties. One, at least, directly resulted in us not winning the game. BUT even with these horrible decisions, we have still lost 2 games by only a COMBINED 6 points. Not too shabby, eh?

Everyone's so rosy around here lately, just thought I would follow suit.

    • Bryce and Dave will determine how many games this team wins next year. It’s not on the WRs. The RBs. LBs. This is about 2 things: 1. Can Bryce continue to come up big in the few key downs that decide most games?  2. Can Canales evolve his play calling to counter punch like the big boys do. Half time adjustments.  teams that score 30+ points on the regular win more games than not. That’s on Bryce and Dave. The offense is top 10 at every position group, save for TE and QB. A baller TE is gravy but not crucial when the receivers are dudes.  The defense is the defense. It’ll be better this season, hopefully by a large margin, but Dave/Bryce is really where it’s at.
    • Normally I'd wholeheartedly agree with this. But I feel like teams figured out this offense after the Raiders game. Bryce was so inept the first 2 games that we couldn't really even run the offense. Dalton's first game showed what we had. But after that game, coverages got a lot tighter and windows were smaller. When Bryce came back in, his ability to extend plays made a big difference. It's really difficult to stop a QB that can beat/escape 1on1 tacklers. It puts a lot of pressure on the defense when you blitz. And he was completing throws in tight coverage with anticipation. Point being Bryce wasn't throwing to wide open receivers that were schemed open by the offense. Occasionally yes. But not often.
    • With the additions we've made to our roster combined with the state of the division and the conference as a whole there is no excuse for this team not to make a legitimate push for 8-9 wins. Anything less is honestly inexcusable. There will be no more free passes for being a doormat in this iteration of the league where even mediocre teams are competing for playoff spots.
