rivera not concerned about the run game

NO ROOM TO RUN: The Panthers finished with 103 rushing yards against the Patriots, but if not for Newton's legs (62 yards on seven carries), that number would have been significantly lower.

Running backs DeAngelo Williamsicon-article-link.gif, Jonathan Stewarticon-article-link.gif and Mike Tolberticon-article-link.gif combined for 41 yards on 16 rushes.

But Rivera made it clear he's not concerned about the state of the rushing attack.

"No, because of what (the Patriots) did," he said. "They played a lot of eight and nine-man fronts. They made it tough on us. They had a very good plan, and remember they had two weeks to prepare and coach (Bill) Belichick and his staff did a nice job preparing for us."

Carolina counteracted the loaded fronts by attacking effectively through the air.

"They definitely were putting an emphasis on stopping the run. We didn't get any easy yards – no big runs," left tackle Jordan Grossicon-article-link.gif said. "But our passing game sure held up and was effective. Cam played a great game, our receivers made big plays, and we really spread the ball around well."

They didn't pull off both. We threw for 209 yards and Cam was 19 of 28 with a passer rating of 125. That is above our game average.

Just because we were able to find success doesn't mean they weren't able to pull it off. They were shutting down our running game without needing to blitz. They were definitely able to drop a lot of guys into coverage while also shutting down our running game. I didn't say they were able to shut down our offense completely.

the exchanges in the backfield are usually so painfully obvious that there is little guessing with run or pass. that's one thing that needs a lot of work. newton and the backs need to do a more consistent job of selling the run.

Maybe so.  There was certainly something tipping off the Pats, because they were all over every designed run we called.

They run a 3-4, they had 8 and sometimes even 9 in the box, I would say they did their fair share of blitzing.

They were bringing 8 and even 9 into the box to stop our run. We call that "Selling out". A full on commitment to stop the run. So... we threw the ball on them.

Cam had a very good day, the Offense as a whole did a great job of staying on schedule, we scored on almost all our opportunities, and the Defense played lights out. The results were the same as its been all year. We won another game.

We are still in the beginning stages of this ride. Let's enjoy it for what it is. Good football being played here in Pantherland. We gained over 100yards on the ground. We did well. Let it go.

They shut the running game down by putting 2 guys outside the tackles to stop the outside runs, the read option and to get pressure on passing downs.  They 2 gapped the NT and one 1 DE to contain the run up the middle along with a inside backer,  that still gave them 4 or 5 five guys to play coverage.  The good thing is that it stops the running game because they are trying to contain not attack.  But it doesn't stop the passing game as it gets little pressure. They played man by the corners often mugging the receivers.  The downside is that Cam had a lot of time on most plays even with a makeshift line

You take what the defense gives you.  As Rivera explained earlier in the thread, if you play 8 or 9 in the box you will stop the run.  But you open up the passing game which we took advantage of.  If they play 6 in the box we run all day.  The point of a balanced offense is that you can run or pass based on what they give you.
