Panthers have a decision to make on Rivera

No doubt we should keep Ron and have him prove that the 12-4 wasn't a fluke.  Give him a chance to prove that the Panthers can have back-to-back winning seasons.

Besides, it's a little late now to let him go -- the pool of available head coaches is relatively small at this time of year.  Missed opportunities and all.

2 year extension would take him through the 2016 season.  I was on the bandwagon last season for letting Rivera go.  I was also on it earlier in the season when we were 1-3.   That is when Rivera learned to trust his team.  Even if we hadn't been successful at least he had belief in his team.  I think he is a good coach.  Well respected by the players (most former players are).

I liked Shula when we signed him.  I was 100% behind him.  Though we were ball control  I just don't see growth on the offensive side.

I hope we sign Rivera to a 2 year extension and bring in an offensive coordinator that can make things happen.  Sadly I think he will get a reprieve because the offense didn't have a full compliment of weapons.

Ron Rivera is not, let me repeat that, not a great gameday head football coach. He lets things like crowd reaction play too big a part in decision-making. His clock management skills have improved from terrible to merely a C-.

THAT SAID, he deserves an extension. He's the best defensive gameplanner in the league and I fully believe he's the reason for the turnaround on defense much more than McDermott. He gets his players to play harder for him more so than just about any other coach in the league. And without Riverboating, we might have missed the playoffs this year.

He has at least continued to get better on gamedays and I bet he'll keep doing so. Extend him.

A two year extension would make the most sense.

We don't want to give him a 4 or 5 year deal because ownership wants to see back to back winning seasons.

We don't want to give him a 1 year extension because it would make it seem like a short term fix or band aid, as Mike Florio called it.

    • Anybody got a clue what this is supposed to mean? 🤔
    • I figured as much. Hopefully he's just resting up and will be ready for round 3 (if we make it that far.)  Sucks to see. Hes been our best defender (besides Slavin) in the playoffs so far.
    • I've never bought into the idea. There's just too much at stake, even for front office people. Jobs are lost, trust is lessened, lives are altered, reputations are damaged and more. Throw in that the average front office person isn't as young as the average player. They may not have ten years ahead of them to salvage their careers. Any given year could be their last. The only person not guaranteed to suffer some direct form of consequence from losing is the owner, and even there you still have problems (fan reaction, team reputation, revenue, etc). You've also got massive egos in play on that front so it can get personal. Mind you, I do accept that there are "fire sales" in order to build for the future, but even those have consequences. They don't exactly guarantee success either. Poorly run teams often just wind up in the same circumstance a few years down the road. Sorry gus, but my tinfoil hat just hasn't fit me for quite a while.
