I think we may be beating a dead horse now though.  Who among us thinks that Brandon LaFell has solidified his spot as our WR2 or WR3, much less Smitty's successor (as argued by some as even late as August)?

I liked Lafell's game, until the last half of the season.

 

As a player you have to be able to step up when your name is called, especially in a contract year.

 

The spotlight seemed to bright for him when Smitty got dinged up.

I think that means when we got down in the 2nd half and after that long throw that Ginn drew PI on.....Ginn had S help on him front that point forward.

89 can go vertical but it really comes down to a defender getting his head around. 89 won't blow past anyone

59 of that came on one garbage time reception looong after the game was over. I'm all for bringing Ginn back, but they should absolutely sign another young veteran to complement what they have in house. Ginn is a great deep threat in 3/4 WR sets and a special teams weapon, but he's not an every-down receiver.

Ted Ginn is easily my surprise of the year. The 49ers had relegated him to being a return man and really gave the impression that he had bad hands. I was worried because of the rep that preceded him- bad hands.

 

I was happily proven wrong, and I don't think it's a stretch to suggest he's a young 28 years old, having rarely been used the previous three seasons in SF. Easily one of the fastest men in the league still, he's a legitimate WR and return man and probably needs a long term deal.

I believe he even acknowledged this in a interview.. Said he couldn't handle the double teams and attention he got after Smitty went down. He's a good 4th/5th option IMO

Big as he is, LaFell should be a physical receiver.  But he isn't.  If anything, he's a finesse receiver.

That's what has been so weird in the latter part of the year.  I'd love to find one of these small school guys with a questionable past who'se big, maybe not a burner, but who can out muscle DBs for balls and press coverage...

yea same here, i thought he was typically solid but he certainly disappeared those last 6 or so weeks it seems
