Michael Schofield opening eyes at Senior Bowl

I coached OL for a very good high school team.  I know a little about fundamentals--there is more about the pro game that I don't get.  Having prefaced this with that, here is my take on this guy:

He has been well coached. He manages to maintain a wide base and keeps his shoulders square.   I saw him (in the Mich St game) get 2 negative grades and about 5 positive grades--that is strong.  He made his mistakes bending at the waist, a bad thing for OL.  This occurs, however, when he is trying to maintain good technique and he gets fooled by a stunt---once the G should have released his block to the RT but he did not, allowing for a stunt/blitz (can't remember) to reach the qb.  This looked bad, but it was not on the RT.  With no back helping that side, the G should have released the DT when he took a route to his outside and stepped down.  Instead, he rode the block out.  The RT saw this and tried to step inside to B gap, but was late.

Later I saw him pull on a counter and sealed the opposite side---not many tackles can do that.  It was beautiful.  He reaches the second level when he needs to.  He has solid feet, decent to good hands, and he plays with good technique most of the time.  He seems smart, based on the improvisation and his understanding of angles. I am not sure about his measureables, but if his arms are more than 33", I would say he is a solid second to third round pick based on what I see.  I would say that he has some potential to convert to a LT down the road.

Finally, did you notice how well he stays on blocks?  Better tnan Bell.  In addition, when protecting the pocket, he does not take an angle directly to the QB like Bell does; he fans out at a 45 degree angle until contact. This is important because Cam is mobile and it expands the size of the pocket.

Nice call.  I like this guy.  I would rather have Lewan, but 75 is a good football player who would upgrade us from day 1.

Damn nice to read comments from someone who really understands what they are talking about....does not happen often on The Huddle.

I keep hearing good things about the T from North Dakota State.

Billy Turner.

Great measurables, but idk how much he has beyond that. I watched him closely Tuesday. Seems to have a really slow first step and gets beat pretty consistently against speedier guys. Solid run guy but I dont know like him as a pass protector at the NFL level if what I saw this week is any indicator. Havent heard anything about him from anywhere else.

MHS - I appreciated your opinion on Schofield......may I ask if you think Moses (UVA) makes it to our 2nd round pick? I know he's starting to shoot up boards after looking like a late 3rd - late 4th rounder initially. I'd love to go BPA WR in the 1st, then double-dip on Moses in the 2nd and Schofield in the 3rd.

I think Moses is this year's Lane Johnson.  Remember about this time a year ago he was a second to third rounder?  I think Moses climbs into the first round-not top 10, but come April he will be in the top round.  His measurements are incredible and he is a pretty solid player.

I am not an expert, by any means, and I have not seen Moses play much, but I did not know that he was shooting up boards.  I have had my eye on him since the UNC - Va game--he was all Virginia had.

I like Hurst in the late second round. Regarding Tennessee's tackles,  I like Jawan James better than I like Antonio RIchardson, but his arms are shorter.  I am not a big fan of Richardson's.  He gives up too much after initial contact.

Schofield was a surprise when I watched the clip--nice find.

Guy names Moses whose job it is to clear a path and lead people to the Promised Land...

It could work.

Who'da'thunk Star would have fallen to us at 14 last year? This scenario would be amazing haha. Hopefully he has a non health threatening heart palpitation at the combine....

This was tongue in cheek seeing as how some keep saying that every player will be gone by 28.  If so, some good guys will be headed down the board.
