What the Mike Mitchell signing says to the league

Are you a veteran defensive player that needs a fresh start? Go play on the Panthers for a year on the cheap, and you will cash in the year after.

All in all, not a bad deal for us.

Shows to go ya, Good coaching can mean the world to players. Rivera took a perceived under performer and turned him into a viable Safety.

But by all means. Let's get rid of Rivera. (Sarcasm) And I hate having to qualify that statement in order to keep the wolves at bay.

I like Mitchell, but I just don't see him being as good as he was here. We have a pretty good history at making unspectacular rental safeties look great. Marlon McCree? Chris Harris? There's one more that played for us for like a year or two that shined on our squad and fizzled out on his new team. As I type this, I'm scratching my head as to why we can't make Godfrey look great...

He got overpaid so it's whatever.

But I do wonder if, given his success in SD and now Carolina, Rivera and company feel as if they can put whoever in the secondary and have the "system" make the player.  This obviously requires a great pass rush which we seem to be intent on keeping.

I know we haven't been known as team with a "system" that players can be inserted into but.....worth thinking about.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
