Thoughts on Cotchery (& Mtchell) from David Newton, Scott Brown

Here is something a little different. David Newton, the Panthers' ESPN cover guy, and Scott Brown, The Steelers' ESPN cover guy, discuss the effective swap of Jerricho Cotchery and Mike Mitchell by the two organizations. It's not too long. Read and enjoy!

David Newton: ...After losing out on Hakeem Nicks and with other free agent receivers signing elsewhere, the market was pretty bare. Cotchery was one of the few veterans left, and the Panthers couldn't go into training camp without somebody to help bring along what likely will be the youngest receiving corps in the NFL -- the 31-year-old Cotchery aside. His value comes from his experience and the leadership. That he's played in a system similar to what offensive coordinator Mike Shula ran for five of his 11 seasons is a plus. That he can play all three receiver spots even though he has been labeled as a slot receiver also worked in his favor.

Brown: Cotchery is class personified, and he is a consummate professional -- in his preparation, dealings with the media and mentoring younger players...

I think Cotchery would best serve Carolina as a No. 3 wide receiver, one who uses his smarts and experience to get open more than his speed. I can tell you this: Ben Roethlisberger trusted Cotchery more than any wide receiver on the roster last season and I think Cam Newton will also find that Cotchery is always where he is supposed to be and just as reliable with his hands. What Carolina has to though is keep adding reinforcements at wide receiver so they don’t have to rely too heavily on Cotchery.

Reminds me of moose. Now that we opened up the WR position, I'm excited to see who gettleman brings in. Didn't have the opportunity last season with a few guys under contract.

I'd love to see us start putting together a group of WRs that mature with Cam and stay with Cam. Young guys. I have all the faith in Gentleman's eye for talent. Even if we don't snag a guy in the first or 2nd, I'm sure gettleman would pick a very good player in the later rounds.

Some good pickups that come to mind that he has made is Robert Lester and Melvin White, whom in their rookie year had a lot to contribute, yet they were undrafted.

Agree 100%.  This team is starting to take reasonable shape.  I was never on the "fug DG" bandwagon and now more than ever I have faith in his methodology..

Moose got old but what he brought to the table will be paralleled by what Cotch brings.  Veteran leadership on the offensive side of the ball.

I think Cotchery provides veteran WR presence on this team that begins to fill the void given Steve Smith's departure.  I wonder if GMan thinks he has a similar player based on stats, without the polarizing presence?   I caveat this by saying that I am not happy about the Smith departure but I do think Gettleman figured Smith was a detriment to the locker room and his numbers could be replaced on the field.  Not basing this on anything, just conjecture for entertainment purposes...

    • Sorry man you lost me at "Teppers have evolved as owners". Limped into playoffs at 8-9 not even above .500 Tepper is trash as an owner bro and that's not even a discussion at this point. 37-83 w/l ratio. Nuff said.... Morgan tho, he's cooking and it ain't cuz of Teppers leadership
    • After listening to Morgan's presser twice, I came away with some key beliefs. First of all, I don't think he's a bullshitter. What you see is what you get. When he says something, he means it.  The Teppers really have evolved as owners. Morgan has mentioned how they're easy to work with--a pleasure to work with a few times now. There seems to be a good relationship between all of them (and include Dave Canales on that). We'll see if it lasts. Yes, no one wanted to come to Carolina with the previous management, but that seems to have changed. The team signed arguably the top Edge, LB and OT on the market, two of them on pretty good deals and one on what I'll say is "not a bad one." And, credit Sunshine Dave "Flowers and Cotton Candy" Canales for helping to change the culture. Morgan mentioned getting guys--and I'm paraphrasing--that are not only great football players but great people. Don't look for us to be acquiring any James Pearce types anytime soon, just saying. We'll see if that holds true in the future. Dan Morgan really has set up the Panthers to take the BPA/BAP. He mentioned it at least a couple of times, and he doesn't seem pressured to pinpoint a particular position. He just wants quality players that will help the team. This is how it's going to be (to your joy or dismay, probably for as long as he's here), and personally I love it. Many of us know how Morgan was when he played: aggressive! That's what he's going to be when making acquisitions. He explicitly said it, and emphasized it. All avenues are open (think FA, waivers...the draft)! Personally, as long as it's controlled aggression and not reckless aggression, I love it.  On KP: "Mobility is big in this league."  He basically says if another QB is the BPA while drafting--we're going by our board, people--we're going to add them.        ...
    • Canes are so fascinating. Despite inconsistent defense and poor goalie play they keep winning.
