With the Carolina Panthers 2014 Rookie Camp coming up tomorrow, you may want to keep an eye on one name in particular.

Of all of the undrafted free agents signed with the Panthers, wide receiver Philly Brown may have the best chance to catch on with the team. Brown led the Ohio State Buckeyes with 10 touchdowns last year. At a lean 5'11 and 178 pounds, he has decent size but could use to put on a few pounds. His route running also has much room for improvement.

But Philly has one thing you can't teach, speed. His 40 low was a 4.38 making him on of the fastest guys on the practice field and able to compete as a return specialist.

With he departure of Ted Ginn it remains to be seen who will be fielding punt returns. Kenjon Barner will be given another chance at the duties, as will Pilares. However, punt return talent is at its thinnest in many seasons. This may be the opening an UDFA like Philly Brown needs to find his name on a locker.

If Brown proves his worth as a special teamer he'll make the roster. When you start getting down on the depth chart, you're looking for players that can and want to excel in third facet of the game (special teams). Hopefully Brown can show us something as a KR/PR.

I'd throw Denicios Allen's name in there as well.

His film is amazing and he's a great wrap up tackler, he's also very quick. His size is a little bit of concern but like I mentioned before when you start getting down to the sixth and seventh guys on the depth chart, you're looking for players that can come in and make an impact on special teams. I think Allen could be what Jordan Senn was for the Panthers for so many years.

I'd also like to point out that the Panthers carried seven linebackers on the roster last year. There are currently only eight linebackers on the roster right now. It appears that Allen, D.J. Smith, and Ben Jacobs will be battling for the final two roster spots at the linebacker position. I like Allen's chances.

I think you will see the Panthers trying him out at Safety where he could provide some interesting benefit especially on running downs and blitz packages.

Why do you say it is puzzling? Just curious of your comment. I think he could make the roster. He is fast and has nice wiggle for possible special team help. I think he could create mismatches in the slot. Most of our receivers now are big boys, so I think there is a place for him.

But yes, he is one to watch this offseason. The battle at the back end of our WR corps should be fun to watch this offseason. One guy is bound to emerge from it. **fingers f'n crossed

      I was watching a YouTube and it was said that scout and GM insider types were saying the NIL had killed rounds 4-7. I don’t know that I buy it, seems like it might for a year or maybe two but then those guys have to move on.  NCAA is apparently about to give 5 years of eligibility. It is gonna skew those entrants older maybe.

      Miller being less raw and more pro ready makes sense of why they picked him. With us having a capable starter in Walker the lower floor higher ceiling player makes sense for us as well. I agree with that.

      I'm from Michigan and have had this discussion with my Lions friends, and they all agree with me, they were never going to take Freeling over Miller.  As, yes, you are correct, they could have left Sewell at RT and taken Freeling, but they are in a SB contention window right now. An OL with Freeling at LT and Sewell at RT is not as strong as Sewell at LT and Miller at RT would be for this upcoming season and likely at least next year as well. 5 years it could be looked back upon as a long term "mistake" to take Miller over Freeling, but for a franchise like the Lions, you can't worry about the long term when you have current SB aspirations.  It's all about maximizing their current SB window over the next 1-3 years. And it's not about style, it's about day 1 readiness, and a lot of "experts" aren't even sure if Freeling is ready to play Week 1 yet at the position he's used to, let alone switching to a side he hasn't played before, but a career starting RT is going to be more than ready to fill that role for them Week 1. I'm 100% convinced that if our draft positioning was swapped, we'd have still taken Freeling, they'd have still taken Miller, and both teams would have got the OT that they preferred due to what each team needs right now and what their current realistic aspirations are for the 2026 season. We're in a position where we can let our drafted OT sit and learn for a bit, they needed a week 1 starter, for me that's where this discussion becomes very easy to understand why each team took the player they did.
