I wouldn't necessarily assume that.  It's a high profile case and the judge might just be trying to CYA.  Sure would look bad on the judge if he/she didn't order Hardy to turn in his firearms and he ended up smoking this broad.  Could also be a liberal judge who would like to just take everyone's firearms.

You assume he has weapons that require special permitting.  There are a ton of "evil black guns" that are functionally no different than your grandpa's semi-auto .30-06 deer rifle.

I know someone that had a licensed firearm. He was going through a nasty divorce when his ex wife told the judge that she feels unsafe that he had a gun so he had to turn it in. Now, he never made any type of threats to her at all but he still had to do it. Not sure if this is the same

Standard procedure here in texas, on any domestic violence charge. Whether the guns were involved or not.

The idea is it's to help keep the victim safe.
