Steve Smith was going to retire after the 2014 season

As much as I love Smitty and as upset as I was about him leaving, I still can't help but think about how much that dude must have ruffled other Panthers' feathers.  There will be some players looking for a little revenge.  Should be an fun game to watch.

The writing was kind of on the wall. He had downsized his home and such. There should have been better communication between both parties in which both are to blame.

I don't think selling his home had anything to do with it. He was pretty open about his reasoning for selling it - it was basically that he bought more house than they needed and didn't think it was a good example for their kids.

Maybe upper management should have told him they were considering cutting him before they told the press... which is why I said there should have been better communication on both ends. Should Steve have told them first? Sure. Should Gettleman have handled the thing better? Sure.

I think its a lesson learned for both, we have a HC that has about 4 years exp and a GM that just finished his first year. Steve has only delt with Hurny and Sefreit for a short stint. He may have been use to their style and like you said both could have handled better

Steve smith is full of sh#@!!!!! He is such an instigator. If he truly planned on retiring after this year, and he did not properly communicate his intentions the management he is even dumber than I gave credit for. This is another Steve Smith "look at me, look at me" attempt. If he keeps this crap up, throwing stones at the organization that tolerated his selfish poo for 13 years me may not be invited back to retire a panther. I'm sick of his sh#@

Everyone starts going to the gym and doing better after a breakup from a long, stagnant relationship.

It's easy for Steve to say this stuff now. Look at how poo went with Jordan Gross. He made his mind up that he was retiring after last year, management reworked his deal, he retired with a nice, sentimental tribute.

Steve Smith could have brought it up to management and said hey I'm done after 2014 season, so let's work my deal accordingly and move on afterward. Now because he was cut he's rejuvenated and ready to go for 3 more years?

That's bullshit. That means with Carolina you were happy collecting checks without being 100% into it, which is the only thing that made you the player you are.

Had Steve told management about his thoughts and not grown complacent, he could have done a Ray Lewis - style farewell tour this year, and gone out the way we all feel he should have.

Thought this was interesting

Said Smith: “I’m just a new guy here. They already have their nucleus and their regimen and I have to fit into that. I have to find out where I fall into place. They don’t have to fit into my world, I have to fit into theirs. So that’s what I’m doing.

Maybe it's a good thing KB doesn't have to fit into Steve Smith's "world".

He hasn't thrown stones at the organization. He could have though with the stunt that Gettleman pulled. Furthermore, to suggest that Richardson is not going to allow Smith to retire as a Panther for these supposed "stones" basically tells me that you (and maybe others) have a misguided hatred for 89, bottom line.

Smith is just going on about his career. If he used all the bullshit that went down earlier this year as motivation, then more power to him. Smith has never been the nicest guy in the world, and I am sure that if he wanted to throw stones then he would. He is still an enigma that people are going to want to interview, and he is still appreciated and valued in football circles, even if he isn't by Dave Gettleman.

    • Some of you act like one can't learn from experience over time. Just because you may not know what you're doing in 2018 doesn't mean that you don't know what you're doing in 2025. Frankly, you grow from experience, and success and excellence gives first-time applicants the hand probably 99.999% of the time.
    • It's an interesting topic of conversation as sports evolves. I think ultimately it would lead to a number of small market franchises folding though. Especially in the NBA where there are so many bad teams that have been bad for years and years in some cases already. But as it stands I think athlete pay draft or no draft aside has reached a point where we can and should realistically ask should they make that much compared to the average person. Now college athletes is a different conversation but even that reaches a breaking point. But we could go down the rabbit hole on this even further into overall entertainment and talk about actors making absurd sums too. In the end I think in sports the powers that be won't allow these changes to even be considered because it opens the door for so many other variables. But who knows how long sports like football will realistically be around after people like us pass on. We're only just now learning about things like CTE which the league and the sport in general will only be able to run away from for so long. As far as the NBA goes my understanding is viewership has been steadily going down for a number of reasons but one crucial aspect is key players missing so many games. The NBA has to figure that out regardless. Especially when considering fans who pay to see these athletes compete in person. But hey I guess let's just try to appreciate what we've got while it still exists in this form eh?
    • I can't see a world where the money goes down, but maybe your lottery odds are now your contract numbers you can offer.  Thunder? You can offer Flagg 4 years, 20 million.  Hornets? You can offer Flagg 4 years, 80 million.  Some form of a system where the money is still there, but so is the freedom of choice (on top of bad teams getting *some* competitive advantage to signing them).
