ESPN NFC South 4 Downs

This is an article with all 4 beat writers for the NFC South discussing a variety of topics from which rookie will have the most impact to how the division will pan out.

A great video starts off the page, but then things start getting hard to read for Panther fans. It seem like all three beat writers are ganging up on the Panthers. Surprise! Everyone except David Newton and the Saints beat writer picks the Panthers to finish last, although he chooses them to be third.

It's an article worth a read, but don't get your hopes up. At least David Newton is keeping the faith! And it's also obvious that the other beat writers don't even keep up with their own division...

Everyone had their opinions about who had progressed and who had regressed but this is what you do in June.  I really look forward to the preseason when we can get a look at all these receivers.  I want to see how we stack up at this point.  Everything is speculation and righteous indignation. I can't wait to see who is a contender versus a pretender.  I am hoping we are as good as last year and Cam engineers some great last minute heroic drives to pay back division rivals who had done the same to us in the recent past.  I want back to back winning seasons and playoff appearances.  I don't think that is asking too much..

Severl of the "Media Experts" also picked a Houston vs Atlanta superbowl last year....and those two team wona COMBINED 6 games.

They are not experts....they are hack writers.

Most everyone thought those teams would be very good. Especially the Texans.

I like D. Newton's pick of Underwood and his mentioning of Ginn's turn around to back it up. I think the division shakes out like this:

Carolina: 11-5

New Orleans: 10-6

Tampa Bay: 8-8

Atlanta: 7-9

Yes, I am a little biased. However, with a top 2 defense that we believe has actually improved. (Addition of Ealy/Cason/Decoud, Godfrey's switch, more experience for each player and for the defense as a unit) Also, with what we believe is a slightly improved offense (better fit for scheme/increased redzone weapons/Cam's progression, which will also help our defense), we should be able to methodically score more points than our defense allows. At least that seems to be the idea. Oh yeah, lets not forget the fact our team is pumped and ready to prove last year was no fluke; and we have a whole new WR line-up ready to show they are not the 'sorriest receivers'. So.....yeh......call me optimistic.

And not just speculation but theyre going to get better. Players improve and regress, it would be very difficult to make predictions right now.

Newton: Most might say the left tackle battle between Byron Bell andNate Chandler. And although finding a replacement for retired Jordan Grossis key, the Carolina competition that intrigues me the most will be betweenCharles Godfrey and Melvin White at cornerback. Godfrey is making the transition from safety to corner after missing most of last season with an Achilles injury. It's a homecoming of sorts, since Godfrey played cornerback for most of his college career at Iowa before the former Panthers coaching staff moved him to safety in 2008. Although White was adequate last season, Godfrey is a more physical player with the potential to be a shutdown corner. If he can win that battle, it's a huge upgrade for the league's No. 2 defense.

Man Idk what that was, but regardless, my fingers are crossed for Godfrey. Achilles surgery and playing the fastest position on the field dont mix well. I like that dude a lot as a team member on our unit and am really trying to curb my pessimism.

I could definitely see that but switch us with NO just because no one ever wins the division twice in a row.

    • Not in same league. Caldwell just hit a 10.00 on the RAS. 2nd out of 3830 from 1987 onward.  https://x.com/MathBomb/status/2027885023387349047 Yeah I mean Louis had a sub 9.00 RAS. Still very very good, no doubt. Louis is small, no 2 ways about it. He is likely a sub package lb in nickel packages or specialized WLB. Be fine ST gunner to start for sure. 6 foot flat and 220lb is pushing it for a starting LB. At 10 to 20lbs less than the other LBs he'd better be closer to the top in most timed drills. He's gonna be challenged when some of the wrs in the class can matchup bigger stronger faster, much less TE in the run game.  Yeah instinct matter and he has them, but that size is a massive red flag compared to many of the other LBS in this class.    Rodriguez is the LB that really climbed this week from a pure grit guy to great flash with athleticism people wrote off cause he was a QB at first at UVA. 18.4mph in the backpedal. Production the last 2 years were great. I'd be thrilled with him as the future mike.   Hill likely moved out of 51 and into the top 45 picks ( Ravens at 45 I can't imagine don't bite if he makes it there). Honestly Hill imo is a 1st rounder and I'd be ok with him as he fits the MLB we have missed the last few years. People would crow it's a reach but he's top 30 all-time I'm RAS for a LB at 9.9+ . Plus he was big time in big games when he was healthy. And that br a big check: meds.
    • Miller, Melo, Coby, Moose, and Bridges all on the floor at the same time must be a nightmare for defenses lol. Switch one out for Kon and still a nightmare. Coby really does bring a true 6th man value and looks like he could start if Melo was out after only a few games of getting his feet wet.
