Cotchery

Avant

King

Bersin

Philly B

if they go five, i think they drop Bersin... yes he's shown a lot in practice, but how much further away are we before he hits his ceiling and what else can he do? i think we've barely scratched the surface of what King can do, Philly B plays special teams and seems like he could be our new Ginn. Pilares is gone because i think what little we've seen is already his ceiling

Definitely feels like Kelvin, Cotchery, Avant, King, and Bersin are the top 5 for now. I keep thinking they'll go with a vet in Underwood for number 6, but I'm definitely pulling for Lucas and Philly (especially hoping he turns out to be a reliable return man).

Brown needs to get the last spot, if it's Pilares that's basically flushing a roster spot down the toilet.

I'm starting to feel like CRA posting in every Deangelo thread because of how over Pilares I am, but he contributes nothing and keeps a roster spot despite no production because of 1 fluke play years ago.

The preseason is only 1/4th of the way done, and he has the advantage on Philly in knowing the offense. They're probably the last spot whoever makes it.

I meant to say this preseason so far; if that's the only thing he's got on Philly, I have to think Philly gets that last spot. And, unfortunately, I think it's going to be another case of a cut CAR WR being out of football, b/c he can't catch on anywhere else.

There is no way Bersin doesn't make this team. He has worked too hard and improved so much not to. Funny how underwood isn't even in the mix. lol.

He's not in the mix because fans know very little about what is actually happening and are basing their opinions on who is going to make the roster on 1 preseason game where Cam wasn't available and the yearly circle jerk that is training camp. I don't mean to minimize camp as being pointless, but it's certainly a step below performing in preseason games which is a giant step below performing in regular season games. The same people that are doubting Underwood making the team probably thought that cutting Hixon was a foregone conclusion at the start of the preseason last year. Not many teams bring in free agents and then abandon the plan after training camp. I'm not saying he's invincible, but he's one of the VERY few players at his position that has actually done anything in the NFL to this point. That's going to be a factor in his favor.

I think that Avant, Benjamin, Underwood, and Cotchery are the locks. I like what I have seen from King and if he continues to play well through the preseason he might make us keep him, but the fact that he's not an impact special teams player might hurt his chances to make our roster as an exclusive WR. He might be a player we try to stash. Pilares has something of an inside track on a position because of his history on special teams. He's not going to make this team as a WR when we have much better options. The fact that nobody is really stepping up and grabbing punt return duties for the ....third straight year is really problematic. Marvin McNutt hasn't shown incredibly well in camp and in this first game but things change fast. I don't think he's in a good position right now. Bersin is a fan favorite for being ....well let's just be safe and say because he's a local kid and JR's neighbor. I don't think he has a future on this team. It's a good preseason story but in my mind it's between Bersin, McNutt, and King as to who we keep on the roster and right now King is leading that charge. Plenty of time for things to change there but King looks pretty good regarding the players who are WR and don't return kicks and punts. Philly Brown has a shot at making this team and his competition is directly with Pilares as a special teams specialist. I don't think we're looking at him too hard at the WR position. Again though, it's going to be somewhat of a challenge to unseat Pilares because of the fact that Pilares has returned kicks at the NFL level before and Philly is going to have to beat him cleanly to make the roster ahead of him.

Cotchery

Benjamin

Avant

Underwood

King

Pilares/Brown (Returner Slot)

If we only keep 5 at the position, it's King that probably gets cut here. Or somebody gets mysteriously injured in the last preseason game.

    • Nothing wrong with starting to look for bodies early. It's a long injury filled season. I doubt we get through unscathed.
    • We're in alignment regarding Thielen not being a game changer/breaker for the Panthers. Getting the ball into hands of playmakers like TMac and XL is going to open up things more than it is getting it to Thielen underneath (or letting him go after 50/50 balls 20yds downfield in his mid-30s). However, in a room where the other guys are two second year guys and two rookies, having a reliable vet that they can learn from is just as important as it is for the QB to have as a reliable third option. I can see that being worth $8.5M (just 3%) of the $279.2M cap... especially when looking at what's left out there: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/_/position/wr However, the idea that the team is forcing production to Thielen and leading to losses isn't supported by the data. Targets, not receiving yards, are how you can tell if a player is being "force fed." In the two games mentioned, let's look at the other players available... vs. TB 10 targets - Adam Thielen 9 targets - David Moore 8 targets - Tommy Tremble, Xavier Legette 3 targets - Jonathon Brooks 1 target - Dan Chisena, Feleipe Franks, Stephen Sullivan vs. PHI 11 targets - Adam Thielen 8 targets - Xavier Legette 5 targets - Chuba Hubbard, David Moore 2 targets - Tommy Tremble 1 target - Ja'Tavion Sanders, Deven Thompkins There isn't exactly a bounty of other names to throw the ball to. In those games, AT was one of the top 2 WRs. Diontae had been gone by that point.   So... yea. Agreed that Thielen isn't exactly carrying the team in his mid-30s, but it's undeniable that he was the most reliable target last season that still has quite a bit of value this season. Whether or not that value is reflected in a manner folks think on the contract is going to come down to personal taste. However, the idea that the team was forcing production to AT and that was the reason behind some losses couldn't be further from the truth.
    • I would also add that I think it's more than money.  AT has looked absolutely miserable out there at times, and there was a lot of speculation he would demand to be traded.  Personally, I thought he was a lock to be moved last year.  Maybe his hamstring is the only thing that prevents that from happening. The fact that he's not only willing to come back and play, but excited about it, really bodes well for Bryce.  AT is a veteran and he knows the game.  If he didn't have confidence in Bryce, I guarantee you he wouldn't be in a Panther uniform this year.  I'll take that as a positive.
