What Should I Do?

Well I just joined a new jazz ensemble about 2 weeks ago after leaving my previous one. I'm the drummer and before me they didn't have one. Well today I just found out about a gig we have this Sunday at 3:00pm (short notice, in my opinion). Now I have to choose between that or watching the Panthers game. I'm really leaning towards skipping the gig to watch the game but I kind of feel like a dick doing that. I haven't missed any part of a Panthers game since 2010, and I don't want to miss this one. I think they could either play without a drummer or find someone to step in, I just need to let them know whether I can or not by Friday. My brother, who I'm very close with, thinks I'm a d-bag to skip the gig, but he doesn't care for any sports so he may not understand. I really just don't know what to do. If I had Sunday Ticket or if the game was on locally I'd just record it and get to do both, but I'm in Boston and have to watch games at the bar. By the way, it's not a gig that people pay to get into it's a free show so I wouldn't be taking something away from people paying for it. Let me know what you think.

We play at one. Do you need too practice if not go to an establishment right near the venue. With the way we are going, the game will be over by 2 pm tops. Problem solved, then your can go pound on something and feel better or maybe playing drums would help too.

Do the gig. Unless you don't want to be part of the project going forward. It was short notice but that's the music biz.

Only way I would back out is if it's not a paying gig and/or the venue sucks. If you bail don't say it's because of the game

You dont know a soul that can DVR the game for you?

YOU joined a group, and when you do that, you take on the responsibility of showing up.  you are correct in that lots of "artists" do not have major interests in sports.

You need to go to the gig.  NFL network also does reruns of games

I was once in your shoes, and panicked any time I was in danger of missing a Panthers game.

I didn't see any of last weeks game because I was on family vacation.

You just need to sort out your priorities and realize you can always catch the highlights.

    • well, players dictating things only works if you have the right collection of players to dictate things.  and in all honesty, not sure if we can answer if we do or don't as fans given......there are no Thomas Davis types around that we know are actually about X and Y (based on years showing it).  Collective team is too new to us to know what these dudes are really about in terms of players carrying the burden of culture.
    • Moore can be put in one of the vet spots on IR. No one will be checking for him at the start of the season. But I would be very perturbed if we tried to go all Gettlemagic and stash an obvious talent like Horn on practice squad like we did Butker. If we can get through this year, next year it will be obvious Moore and AT will be gone, starting namely with AT's contract.
    • Culture change comes from the top down, not from drafting a 3 and no D guard. I doubt Lamelo is gonna take his cues from this 20yr old kid lol. If Brandon Miller couldn’t change the culture with how good he is and how much he hustles on both ends, Kon Knueppel sure as hell ain’t changing it. Ace Bailey by all accounts is also a great teammate and hard worker, btw, who was drafted by a team he supposedly didn’t want to go to yet he immediately bought in. And he’s got actual length and tools on both ends of the floor. I feel this pick is going to age like milk rather quickly.
