Was Gettleman the right GM choice? How long to stay with him?

After QB, the smart people agree DL is the next in terms of need/want/value(rookie contracts). I didn't like the back-2-back DT picks is 2013, but it proved to be the correct move. I said before the 2014 draft, gimme at least 2 OTs. Ozzie new some said after the top Five OTs, there is a huge drop off same thing dave said. I'm not going to bitach about UDFAs, even if there was about five.

Given hardy and cj, well both could be gone at seasons end. So the early pick, could easy be a starting DE. You cannt judge these young DL draft as finished products. Sure star is struggling, but short looks great.

i bet Cam Newton and many more people disagree with "the smart people" regarding the need being greater at the DL position rather than LT or even RT.btw, good luck with the blue goose pass rusher.

He is picking through the dumpster for free agents. His drafts have been pretty good.  When he gets some cap room, you will see what he is about.  Don't criticize my shopping because I have $10 and can only afford Walmart.  At least I am not putting stuff on layaway to make the children giggle on Christmas morning.

(NOTE: In the past, I have used metaphors and people without the capacity to think in figurative language have been rather critical.  They say profound things like, "That's dumb!" or "What does Walmart have to do with anything?"  I blame the lack of funding in public schools and intimate first cousins for this, but for those of you who feel compelled to attack this metaphor, let me align it with the points it illustrates: "Dumpsters" and  "Walmart" represent the bottom rung of free agency.  This may not be effective if you shop at the Salvation Army and dollar stores, but most of us get the point.  $10 is a small amount of money with which to shop.  Of course, that too is subjective--some may not agree. Finally, "layaway" is the tendency to take things that you can't afford but think you will be able to afford later.  We (fans) are the children who want to giggle on Christmas morning receiving gifts that will bankrupt our parents (the cap) so we can get excited and live for the moment.  In other words, I am using examples of other things to basically say the GM is broke now and will be until this off season.  We should not blame him because he did not find bargains in free agency after many other teams with needs and more money have picked through them.  Can you name a free agent he passed over this winter that is doing great for another team?  Even with the benefit of hindsight, it is hard to criticize him concretely and specifically.  It is easy to criticize him because the team is losing and it makes you feel better to point a finger).

Ah finally, the brain dead arrive.

In case you haven't been watching, drafting Ealy was a very smart move. Hardy is done and Johnson might be on the decline. Then there's Star (you know, the guy who was basically a DROY nominee) and Short (who is quickly becoming our most versatile and feared DL) who apart of the future.

The 49ers and Seahawks didn't become devastating right after drafting. It took a few years to mold guys like Chancellor, Bowman, Sherman, Lupati, etc.

Stop your whining.

you didn't answer my question.however, you tried your best with what you had to work with.anyway,i would give DG a realistic C-grade thus far.how about you?

btw,

example 1,Chancellor is a strong saftey

example 2,Bowman is a linebacker

example 3,Sherman is a cornerback

example 4,Lupati is a guard

so you expect me to draw a narrative using the aforementioned examples?i am sorry but i just dont see one.

I think that there were and are too many Gettleman apologists.  That's what I think.  I was on his bandwagon, but after seeing the team get pummeled---Cam Newton get pummeled---in so many games this year because of a lack of vision, I am through making all kinds of excuses for him.

I don't believe that one can go into a draft with a BPA-or-die philosophy.  I feel that you have to be somewhat flexible and adapt to the situation at hand.  I feel that BPA is OK in general, and I would use it as a general rule of thumb, particularly in rounds 1-3 (maybe 4), but after that I would start to take need into account. Furthermore, I would have to have a loose plan to bridge some gaps if I just had to take the BPA at the expense of not filling a position.

I realize that he came into a cash strapped situation, but he could have acted sooner to get some cheaper and perhaps better options to at least looking like he was trying to compete this year.  There were/are at least a couple of returners/scat backs still out there that have pro experience.  There are still a couple of receivers out there with some upside that are out there that could have at least made us feel better about him and us.  He could have at least put a feeler out there to see if there was some interest, which I believe that there would be because some money on a short term contract with a loose promise to compete for  job next year is better than nothing in most guy's eyes.

Moreover, the way that he got rid of Smith was chicken poo in my estimation, not to mention that I still believe it was ill-advised from a personnel perspective.  And, though people try and argue otherwise, I believe that Gross was going to play this last year of his contract if he had been left alone.

Lastly, I would have let Hardy walk due to the cap constraints, but that's just me.  I would have tried to trade him to the Raiders and acquired Jared Veldheer and perhaps Denarius Moore.

There are just so many things that i would have done differently to bridge the gap at least, but Gettleman is the professional so I have to trust his judgment.  That being said, he'd have a couple of more years---maybe three---to prove to me that he actually could right the ship if I were J-Rich.

One thing I would do is make him fire Shula. But that's just me.

I'm interested in what everyone thinks.

For me, I just am having trouble looking at that oline and secondary and believing he is.

I've never been what he was with the VP of Pro Personnel, I believe that was the title, but like almost everyone on here I could have told him the tackle situation was not going to work along with Harper and Decloud...there just had to be midrange talent available better than this.

Then the whole Smith situation and extending Rivera and his staff

Even some of his draft picks are head scratchers.

As a PSL holder my tickets are virtually worthless again.

The team is just spectacularly bad. It's embarrassing and I'm not sure it needed to be. How they won 3 games is beyond me and make no mistake even if they should manage to beat lesser teams so what...is that what we want....A team that can't even compete against better teams? Isnt that what we had the later years of the Fox era?

For me the deal breakers are the tackle situations and Harper/Decloud. I just don't believe in him

Certainly the emotions of having a disappointing season can skew things.  IMO, it's hard to judge Gettleman one way or another until after he has a chance to unfug us because of Hurney's contracts.  We can judge his performance more accurately once he puts together a team he wants and not a team that he has too by default.

We knew prior to hiring DG that any GM we hired was going to have a tough task at hand initially.  Now that we're in the midst of that tough task we can't lose sight of the cards DG was dealt upon taking the job.  We all knew our team wasn't an over night fix.  Our success last season has given us exaggerated expectations.

    • Watching games this year again and Bryce missed a wide open XL many times and some of them were in the endzone. I get the kid has mental lapses and hasn't broke out yet, but this is year three on a rookie deal! Cutting bait now is too early. If he hasn't gained anymore trust from his QB, posted any highlights, little production, or outright gets beat out then we can talk movement.
    • Samesies   I truly may just cash completely out of Panther football if we give him a long term deal that isnt necessary.  I have watched NFL for 50 years now and I can without a shadow of a doubt say you cannot win consistently with BY.  Way too many limitations to deal with.   I may come back around in 3 years when the inevitable happens and all parties are either cut and/or fired.  Giving him a deal before this season so you hopefully can get him cheaper in case he "blows up" or if you truly believe that he will has to be the most moronic decision a gm can make when the evidence is laid before you with different players
    • This is the one! I was at that game and all KB had to do was lay down on the corner after the pick or make an obvious tag while he was down. He had already ran a lazy route. Then if Cam would've just walked to the sideline like most elite QBs instead of trying to make the tackle.  A lot of people bring up the TJ Watt hit, but he just reaggravated a bunch of scar tissue from that play. And every Cam hater said that the running did him in and it was a dive tackle attempt on an interception that initially began the shoulder deterioration. He still went to New England later and would've got them in the playoffs had their A team not sat out the covid year. We quit on him too early. But hey how good was Teddy? Am I right?
