RR: OC Shula did a good job at end of the season

Turn on the last playoff game.  I think there were TWO screen throws to the slowest WR in the league, Jericho Cotchery, for like 2 yards or less.  That's one game.  That's two drives that are stalled because of a stupid play call.  This happened many games.

This guy called a play in the PLAYOFFS in the redzone where Bersin is the #1 read, lol.

This guy throws deep 80% of the time on 3rd and short like he's fooling the league.

Probably the worst red-zone team I've ever seen.

Used Avant for half a season like he was a deep speed threat but is a possession receiver.

Continued to call SLOW developing plays when our o-line was terrible early in the season.  You must adjust to what you have, injuries happen in the NFL.  Shouldn't take just HOPING the o-line becomes decent and keep running those letting your QB get crushed.

Took 3/4 of a season before realizing we need more speed on the field with Philly (even though everyone else knew this in the offseason).

Forgets Olsen is on the team 2/3rd of each game (albiet I understand he has to block a lot but you still need to get him some action).

That's just a tiny bit....

Again i'll state who is responsible for the wr's we had on the team, who's responsible for the wr active during gameday? if that is shula then i agree we could do better in the oc department......bersin being the number one read all depends on who decided he should be in on that play, the deep balls on 3rd and short again i'll have to see if cam's primary read is covered before i can say anything about that and if it really was a deep pass on 3rd and short then we can do better in the oc department and should start looking now.

here comes the tricky part calling "slow" developing plays when we don't have a o line, compared to calling quick plays when we have one or two receivers that can get consistent separation.philly not being could be a ron thing i don't know, bersin being in could be a ron thing i don't know. Olsen being out of some games had primarily to do with him have to stay in and block

did have some dumb redzone plays but also had a lot of dropped tds can count 4 off my head

not saying the guy is great but whether he needs to be replaced or not would all depend on the answer to theses questions.

is he the reason the tempo is slow, is he the reason improper personnel was on the field, crucial mistakes in play-calling in important moments, with better personnel are you getting the same results?

i feel awful for Cam. Rivera is ruining his career by shackling him with Shula. Shula on Cam: "Even the elite guys, which he's not elite, but even the elite guys have tough games. But you just keep showing him when he's doing good enough, when he's not. Practicing it. Trying to make it more automatic."

Over the Shula era at OC (2013-2014), Cam is #22 in the NFL with an 85.5 passer rating behind the following 21 QBs:

NFC

109.6 - Aaron Rodgers (Packers) - Pro Bowl, All-Pro

104.1 - Tony Romo (Cowboys) - Pro Bowl, 2nd Team All-Pro

100.8 - Drew Brees (Saints) - Pro Bowl

100.5 - Nick Foles (Eagles)

97.9 - Russell Wilson (Seahawks)

91.7 - Matt Ryan (Falcons)

88.8 - Colin Kaepernick (49ers)

88.8 - Jay Cutler (Bears)

88 4 - Mark Sanchez (Eagles)

87.2 - Carson Palmer (Cardinals)

86.1 - Josh McCown (Bucs)

AFC

108.7 - Peyton Manning (Broncos) - Pro Bowl, All-Pro

99.5 - Philip Rivers (Chargers)

97.8 - Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers) - Pro Bowl

92.1 - Tom Brady (Patriots) - Pro Bowl

92.0 - Andrew Luck (Colts) - Pro Bowl

91.2 - Alex Smith (Chiefs)

88.3 - Ryan Fitzpatrick (Texans)

87.6 - Kyle Orton (Bills)

87.2 - Ryan Tannehill (Dolphins)

86.4 - Andy Dalton (Bengals)

this is why the whole situation is so frustrating. we have one of the most unique QBs (if not THE most unique) to ever play the game... and we're sitting here running some derpfug offense that demands perfection to be somewhat effective. we CRAWL down the field and need these brutally long drives to score. i NEVER see easy throws for cam to make, instead each completion is to a receiver with a DB draped on his back.

Long plays that take forever to develop and make Cam hurry a pass because he's about to be pancaked before the routes open up.

I honestly think our roster additions that gave us a better season hid deficiencies with Shula ball rather than their additions allowing Shula ball to succeed like Ron says.

Ron's biggest mistake is letting feelings effect how he sees a game, Godfrey is a prime example of his excuses for the player overshadowing Ron being able to see how bad he was till it was too late.

i don't get where you guys are assuming shula had control over who plays?

from what i saw this season i guarantee cam would have thrown more picks had we start running quick routes.

wr weren't finishing routes, dropping balls, and basically not getting any separation. i can name numerous times cam threw a quick slant that was either picked off or almost picked off.

Seattle is successful because they adapt and are flexible. Not to mention a better defense and run game, requirements for ball control.

Ball control works if you break down the game and use it smartly when it needs to be used, and don't use it when it doesn't- in other words still being able to change, adapt and stay competitive even when things aren't going your way controlling TOP.

Shula views the entire game, before it starts as one big time clock. The entire game is about controlling possession from the first play to the last. There is absolutely no room for adapting and being flexible. If our run game lacks we are screwed, if we are down by any points by the fourth quarter, we lose. If we don't have half a quarter to score we lose.

A classic Shula game is getting down in points and seeing the herp derp plays called all of a sudden because Shula has no CLUE how to adapt and catch up when he isn't ahead and controlling the clock. You can easily go back and watch games and know exactly when Shula is starting to panic and call these plays, it's incredibly obvious.

Above all, we have Cam Newton and are trying to run this garbage. It seems so very stupid to put Cam in that kind of play calling. Seattle's Wilson is almost built for it but nothing about Cam is in my opinion.

Greg Olsen, KB, Philly Brown, fozzy ...

Yet we are still calling plays to Bersin.

Give me a break.

Shula only can work with what he is given....

and a one of the play calls was perfect....Bersin just sucks. Cam also was the one who checked to the pass where Bersin was abused at the line by their backup CB.

Shula was forced to go against the number one D with guys at WR who should of been praxtice squad or backups.

If Cam audibles to a great play call....and the crappy WRs implode it. That isn't a Shula issue.....talent issue.

Just heard this from Rivera's mouth and almost gagged on my sandwich. So odds are everyone's favorite OC is not going anywhere...unless DG cans him. Highly unlikely since the HC picks his staff. We are in for another dose of Shula in 2015 it appears.

What kind of sandwich?

How would Rivera assess his performance at the beginning of the year?

Sometimes I think Rivera says stuff in the media hoping it will come true.  He is a BS artist.  When he said, "It was my decision to bench Hardy."  BS.  When he said, "Bell will be better on the left side because he is left handed..."  BS.  He praises people who suck because he wants to instill this, "Team--us against the world."  He refuses to throw people under the bus, which is why players like him.  That is a good thing, for the most part.  I do not think he is interested in joining the witch hunt.

We have to remember--Rivera is wearing headsets too and he can direct Shula during games.

I look at the difference Rivera may be talking about....Cam started running.  Shula was trying to save him by keeping him in the pocket.  Then Shula started running Cam to save himself.  The biggest difference was how Cam was being used.

Sorry for interrupting the thread of doom and gloom.

According to Gettleman and Rivera the reason the Panthers were not more successful this year is largely due to a lack of quality football players, not coaching.

I know this is a crazy thought, but what if Gettleman and Rivera are right?

A lack of player talent? That problem is right up Gettleman's alley. He seems pretty adept at finding quality football players whether through FA, the draft, UDFAs or the local Dollar Store. So there is no reason to think next season's roster won't be a marked improvement over 2014's.

If that is the case, next season could turn out to be one of the best we've seen yet.

    • I mean, this year we should've easily been a playoff team in my opinion. We should have easily had two or three more wins--at least one--had not Bryce crapped the bed. But let's be serious about human nature and what we know about our FO. I wouldn't bet the farm that Bryce will be anything but the defacto starter in 2026, because (inconsistent though it was) we have exceeded expectations this year, and some in the FO probably believe, rightly or wrongly, that Bryce is at the center of that. You know, piece of bread seems like a meal if all you've had is a cracker. That being said, Bryce has shown plenty of inconsistency if not a downright pattern of flaws. He's a third year QB, and some, if not most, of his metrics aren't pretty. It could be argued that he should be further along (for me it's not really arguable). So, hopefully the decision makers will acquire a couple of plan Bs. I would hate it and love it if we identified "our guy" in the draft, and that it was somehow achievable to acquire him with a couple of high draft picks or even less. But we already pulled the trigger on Bryce with arguably awful results, so that's got to make the decision makers a little skittish to repeat a mistake that should be still fresh on everyone's mind. That being said, I think that it's more likely that we acquire a player like Mac Jones, Malik Willis or Trey Lance in free agency, and also target a day two or day three developmental pick in the draft with some real upside. That pick for would be Drew Allar who should slide to day three (I'm thinking). I think that this is more realistic than them releasing Bryce from his starter's role from the get-go, or someone just flat out playing themselves definitely into the starter's role by the time the season begins.  Now, again, if we can find "our guy" that changes the narrative and is expected to be the starter from day one, I'd be excited, if not downright ecstatic, but I don't think that's a realistic expectation.  Getting back to the team in general, If we don't make some improvements, including QB, I wouldn't bet that we'd necessarily be a playoff team next year, because, the rest of the NFCS is likely to improve next year. I don't expect that teams in our division will be necessarily able to "backdoor" themselves into the playoffs next season. So we're going to have to hit on at least a couple of picks, get healthy along the line, and fundamentally change the way we're calling plays because lightning probably isn't striking twice. I'm hoping that we'll have a real breakthrough season by 2028, because this season and next season aren't likely to be it because removing ball-and-chains ain't easy unless you got the key, and It's still gonna take some time to find it.
