Rank the following Panthers linebackers from best to worst

If you want to say a guy like Will Witherspoon had a better overall career as a Panther than Dan Morgan, I don't know, the stats might say that. But for this particular thread where I'm assuming there are no injuries involved, I don't think you can rationally argue that Will Witherspoon at his best ever approached Dan Morgan. That especially holds true for Micheal Barrow and Carlton Bailey or, I don't know, James Anderson.

Need to,separate between 3-4 and 4-3. Greene was really a DE and not often in coverage. The same for Lathon who wasn't that great doing either.

So 3-4 linebackers it would be Mills, Greene, Lathon

As for 4-3 it would be Kuechly, Davis, Beason, Morgan. Morgan could have been number 2 if he had ben able to stay healthy. But since he didn't he is at the bottom of my list.

Greene and Lathon, when they were salt and pepper in 96 were the best pass rushing combo in the NFL.  Lathon could have been on the top of this list if he could have stayed healthy.  But they are not really LB in my opinion they were pass rushers.  To me LB are more than just pass rushers.  So for me its:

Kuechly

Mills

Davis

Morgan

Beason

Morgan and Beason were never that good in pass coverage.  The best 2 pass coverage LB are TD and Witherspoon.  But he's not on the list so....

Greene still put up big numbers in the 4-3 though. But yeah, he was a pass rusher regardless....but he has some diversity to his game

I guess I should clarify that I meant Barrow was only here for a little while. We signed him from Houston and he did play well, I was thinking two seasons, but if you say three I still wouldn't put him there. He was like Curtis Loftonish. Good solid under the radar player in my opinion.

Morgan had 20 something tackles in the Super Bowl and was always a great linebacker when he didn't have a concussion. Lamar Lathon was Terrell Suggs 20 years ago and as good as Kevin Greene. Just my opinion.

Great thread though.

Just like in the pro bowl, I don't feel 3-4 pass rushers and 4-3 LBers should be considered the same position. Also, are we ranking based on what they did for the Panthers only? Are we taking into consideration what they "meant" to the organization, or just their play on field? What about players whose resumes aren't yet complete, are we projecting for Kuechly? If so, there's little doubt he will end up as one of the greatest LBs of all time, much less in Panthers history.

The fact that anyone could put Thomas Davis at the bottom of any list just hurts my heart.

He is the most underrated player in the history of the league.

Davis healthy and older.....is better than any version of Beason. IMO

If we were to play one game and I had to take only one of those guys, without a doubt I would take Kuechly

Depends who the game is against. A pass heavy team I might opt for someone else. Run or balanced than Luke

    • I do think the rating is fair given how this unit hasn’t proven it with production. I understand you have to rank off production, not potential. However, our unit is also in a position to make this rating look foolish a year from now. We have 4 guys in the WR/TE room who all could legitimately take the next step this year, and catapult our rank. A guy under a lot of people’s radar after we took Tet, Jalen Coker. Mark my words, he will become the star of this room, and be the heir to Thielen.
    • Exactly. You’d think 2-7 wins a year (in a 17 game season no less) since 2017 is going to keep us bottom tier. Every year we say the same poo like we haven’t been a bad team the past 7 years. Until we prove we aren’t a bottom dweller, that’s where we’ll stay ranked. God forbid we have OL injuries like 2016.
    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.
