What traits are you looking for in the new WR'S.

Simply isn't true. Give me a football player over a track star any day of the week. You can make someone catch better, but you can't coach great hands. Beckham has enormous hands, it's not by coaching that he catches everything.

How many size/speed guys come into the league and flop?

Bob Hayes says you are wrong.  Give me a guy who runs a 4.3 and drops too many passes over a guy who has good hands and runs a 5.0 any day.  And no we were not talking about pure track stars over football players as you want the conversation to morph into.  We are saying that you can't teach a guy to be big and fast but you can teach a guy to run a route and concentrate on the ball.

FWIW how many guys who are short and have no speed even make it to the NFL if we are using that type of argument.

As for Beckham- he ran a 4.3 40 time so he fits the speed dimension so why use him as a counter argument which further illustrates my point that you need size or speed, hopefully both.  But without one or the other you dont even make it to the NFL. Fun fact: both his mom and father were track stars. LOL

Lol. You said, "anyone can be taught to run routes and catch". That's simply not true. Look at the OBJ and Watkins comparison this year. Where did OBJ beat him as far as size - speed measurements went? Nowhere. But you can't teach somebody the quick twitch that Beckham has. Beckham create natural separation in the way he runs his routes and his fluidity. His hands are massive and he catches everything.

While I realize I'm comparing two pretty outstanding prospects, just looking at size-speed, one would say that Watkins was the better prospect. I never felt that way. OBJ was always going to be special. I saw it his first snap at LSU. There are things you can't teach. If all somebody had to be was big and fast, Jeremy Hill would have played last year.

I know Beckhams parents were track stars.

You clearly miss the point which is God gives players certain gifts that you have through genetics.  Other things are acquired during your lifetime.  For most folks you are limited by your physical attributes more so than you are by those attributes you can acquire. That is the point.  Stop being so argumentative particularly when you are arguing a point that I already stated was needed.  Size of hands fits under the size category- those god given gifts which I said you can't teach.

And we can all find exceptions to the rule or guys who had the size and speed and failed.  But as I noted, most players who dont have size or speed don't make it to the NFl to begin with.  So again why keep arguing?

Hand eye coordination and route running. Also explosion off the line. I rather have a guy with average speed and hands than a speedy guy that drops everything.

The problem with that logic is you can teach a guy to catch the ball but your guy will never get any faster and with age will slow down ever more. Look at what Proehl did Ginn for example. If he stayed here he would have improved even more.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
