Panthers Release Safety Thomas DeCoud

Recommended Posts

The Carolina Panthers have released Thomas DeCoud after one season. Brought in as a free agent from Atlanta in 2014, DeCoud often struggled in coverage. He was eventually replaced by rookie Tre Boston who performed at a much higher level than DeCoud.

DeCoud was the play caller in some Special Teams situations, which may have influenced his release as well. Special Teams Coordinator Richard Rodgers was demoted to an assistant secondary coach after a dismal Special Teams year.

The Panthers are likely to add a veteran Safety or spend an early to mid round selection on a Safety this season.

DeCoud was very fan friendly, often seen signing autographs for fans at away games as he entered and exited the tunnels for warm ups. He was also regarded very highly in the locker room for his likable demeanor.

Really wish we would cut Harper or just play him as an OLB on passing downs he's to slow to play safety. Anyone know if we save any cap by releasing him?

I highly doubt they cut him.  He's done to well keeping our young guys in the right position, and helping them develop.  Also, his play down the stretch was pretty damn good.

    • I've shown you numerous comps for other tackles in the same age and talent range.  His contract, taking into account his age, health, etc.  is the going rate.  It's a fair deal. I've shown you examples of how long it usually takes to find even an average replacement.  Hell, look at every tackle that has ever started for the Panthers.  How many would you consider a success?  They are not easy to find. After everything we've done with this team since drafting Bryce why would we decide to let our best linemen go and add a huge question mark at tackle?   FA is a crapshoot in which any guy available will have cons/issues.  If not, they'll cost a fortune.   Outside of a first or maybe 2nd round pic next year it'll take a few years for a tackle to learn the position at the NFL level.  There are still questions about Icky. Every vet NFL player deals with maintenance.  Between the contract value and history I'm not overly worried about his knee.  I contend his knee issue isn't anything to be overly worried about.  It's not zero risk but it's an acceptable risk.  Every player we draft and every contract we sign has risk.  You're blowing up his own negative words about his knees and ignoring him saying he is healthy and the knee is a non issue.  You have a strong chicken little complex with this team.  Being he has always been a Panther they are very aware of any health issues. We paid now because now is cheaper.  If his knee was really an issue they would have waited.  That tells me it's not the issue you want it to be.
