Panthers Sign Michael Oher

Excerpts from the article...

The Panthers have signed free agent Michael Oher, a veteran offensive tackle with a Super Bowl ring and familiarity with the way Carolina likes to do things up front.

The 6-4, 315-pound Oher, a staple along the Baltimore Ravens offensive line for five seasons, signed a two-year contract. He spent 2014 with the Tennessee Titans and was released/failed physical last month.

Selected with the 23rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Ravens, Oher played his first two seasons under the tutelage John Matkso, who left Baltimore following the 2010 season to become Carolina's offensive line coach.

"He's a great coach," Oher said. "I learned a lot from him my first two years when he was in Baltimore, and the assistant that was with him in Baltimore carried his techniques on for a couple of more years.

"I'm excited to be back with him, working with him again. He knows how to teach football."

Oher joined the Titans as an unrestricted free agent last March. He started the first 11 games at right tackle before a toe injury ended his streak of 91 consecutive starts. After Oher sat out one game and was inactive for one, the Titans placed him on injured reserve.

And here's a quote that illustrates just how completely far off some folks are regarding the perception of the organization by free agents and draft picks...

"I'm excited to be joining an organization that knows how to win. They've won the past two division championships, and I'm excited to be a part of it," Oher said. "When I came here on a visit, the culture was great. They're very into winning and doing everything possible to win."

Rotoworld:

"The Panthers are one of the most tackle-needy teams in the league, but even swinging gate Oher wouldn't solve their problems. Oher has the name but no game. He's on the fast track to falling out of the league. ... Oher is still only 29 (in May), but has been ineffective his entire career. He'll search for work as someone's No. 4 tackle. ... The "Blind Side" has been a major liability in both the run and pass game for nearly five years now. ... Oher never got better during his five-year stint in Baltimore, struggling mightily in spot duty at left tackle and performing at a well-below-average clip on the right side.

...

Oher can't play left tackle and even struggles mightily on the right side. He's also a penalty machine. The Titans would be better off with Byron Stingily at right tackle. ... The Titans paid Oher $6M for this season and proceeded to watch him get tossed around like a rag doll [at RT opposite Roos then rookie Lewan]. ... He graded out negatively in both the run and pass game, finishing as a bottom-five tackle by Pro Football Focus. ... "I think right tackle is my best position," Oher said. "I think I'm better over there and the team is better." He's right about that last part. But no matter which side he's played, Oher has given up far too many pressures and taken too many penalties."

    • These kickers are getting so good
    • They're pretty far off, double T-Mac's stats to get to the same targets as XL and it would be 4 drops to 7.  A 3 drop difference might not sound like a lot, but it's still almost twice as many drops on the same number of targets. Not to mention, if I remember correctly, XL's drop problems last year seemed more down field, where he was dropping passes he should be making and it was clear his poor hands were there reason he dropped them. And weren't both of T-Mac's drops this year on quick hitters with blockers out in front of him?  I know at least the second one was as he was going to go for a huge play and maybe a TD on it. To me, and yes, I'd say this about any other player, those are drops because a rookie was trying to do too much in making a play before securing the catch.  Much easier to improve upon than dropping passes because you have bricks for hands and body catch more often than hands catch, like with XL. And yes, 100%, which is why I wasn't one of those people you were referring to with talking about him that way last year.  Yes, I said he had drop problems., because he did, but I didn't think they were unsolvable and expected to see great improvement this year (unfortunately not sure that happened though).
    • Every iffy call has gone the way of the Chiefs tonight, per usual. They had a TD earlier tonight that looked like obvious offensive pass interference and the flag was throw but picked up.
