Voth's sources: Panthers have no intentions of signing second wave free agents

"How We Misread Dave Gettleman’s “Dollar Store” Comment ... Gettleman didn’t say he was staying out of the dollar store

...

According to league sources with knowledge of the teams’ plans, the Panthers accomplished much of what they wanted before free agency kicked off Tuesday afternoon. They currently have no intentions to sign second wave unrestricted free agents, so, sources say, potential targets like Cecil Shorts , or Derrick Morgan aren’t options. ... It may not be the kind of shopping many hoped for, and there’s still work to be done, but the Panthers got what they wanted.

...

But there’s no question there are still holes on the roster. Ted Ginn ticks off the speedy wideout and returner boxes, but the Panthers are still without a No. 2 receiver. Michael Oher could fit in...but they still need at least one tackle who could be the future on the left side. Each of those worries could be taken care of in a draft loaded at both positions, but that still leaves needs at cornerback, defensive end, safety and running back. That’s not much of an improvement from the end of last season"

So much for filling needs in free agency to allow for BPA in the draft. If we're done trying to sign contributors and are just filling out the bottom of the roster, Gettleman must he planning on absolutely nailing the draft.

What other true needs do we have? By resigning our players, we've filled all the departing needs and we've filled ot/pr.

This is good news in my opinion. Not interested in crabtree, nicks, Morgan, j long, etc etc.. No need to waste millions on these guys when you can find a younger comparable player just walking the streets. Fans are going to start paying attention to these late round picks and and udfas.

    • I think he's gone, and rightfully so, if he turns in another losing record. The "talented roster," regardless of how true or not, is a double-edged sword. If the roster is so much improved now from 202X then why are you still producing losing seasons? On one hand, maybe that's what needs to happen. Have the GM hire the new coach, and then have the new coach pick his guy to run his system. That is typically how it works in the NFL. Not the forced inheritance deal we have had in place.
    • Hinging on Brooks to be our spark...be good if it happens... but not holding my breath....RB next draft. Morgan gambled...it would be a 2 year payoff if thing happened.
    • Only way Canales is fired is if we are attrocious everywhere....  defense /special teams and offense..  There are enough "questions" on if BY9 is the guy that ownership wouldn't fire the coach for "just" mid qb play.  Especially with as talented a roster that has played "well enough" to win some tough football games and hang in there against the top tier of the NFL ...(mostly).   Now total team suckage..yeah .. but I don't see that happening.
