No Need for the Nickle or Dime Packages

If we had 2 safetys that could cover like corners I could say " maybe your right".  We have 1 safety that is ok in coverage and another that does not cover as well as any of our staring linebackers.  If we keep our base 4-3 on the field all the time we will probably be in the bottom 5 of the NFL in pass yards given up per game.

Shaq Thomson might be as good in coverage as Landon Collins, and he might be the worst coverage safety in this draft.

I dunno, I still think the Nickel package with Shaq rolled to SS might be our bread and butter. Imagine this:

              Shaq                       Tre

                       TD        Luke

Tillman   Bene                            Norman

                 Ealy   Star   KK    CJ

Just looking at our D roster, I already feel confident about being a top-5 unit next year:

DEs: Johnson, Ealy, Addison, Horton, Frank

DTs: Star, Short, Edwards, Cole

LBs: TD, Luke, Shaq, Glanton, Klein

CBs: Norman, Bene, Tillman, White, Williams

S: Boston, Harper, Coleman, Jones, Lester

Add another DE and damnnn

i would hope that Shaq would start but it is unlikely. Guys who are tweeters and primarily athletes can be good at a number of things but are often not great at anything right away. I suspect he will be like Davis was coming in. He will be in the rotation but not a starter right away unless it is at linebacker and he might be substituted for in a nickel or dime package. He was drafted for potential not because he is plug and play. So to assume that he will be the starter by the middle of the season is optimistic at best.

to play devils advocate. do y'all really feel comfortable with Shaq lining up in the slot vs. Cobb, Hilton, or Beckham? teams run 3/4 WR sets a lot more, which is why the panthers played 65% of it snaps last year in the nickel.

I just see Rodgers, Luck, and Manning smiling once they see both 3 LBs, and Harper on the field.

    • Got to talk to Tiny Lister once back when I worked for AT&T.  He was a nice guy.
    • The team signed undrafted rookie JJ Weaver from Kentucky. The 25-year-old Weaver played six seasons in college (with injury waivers), and had 21.5 sacks. He was a three-time team captain for the Wildcats. To make room for him on the roster, the Panthers released outside linebacker Amare Barno. Barno, a sixth-round pick in 2022, tore his ACL late in the 2023 season and began last year on the physically unable to perform list. He had 3.0 sacks in three seasons, appearing in 29 games. Sad to see. He seemed to have a lot of potential when he was drafted. Injuries really derailed him though.
