Cotchery's Situation

Cotchery no longer has a role outside of being the wise old sage. could free up another spot now that i think this virtually end the Joe Webb era. He basically was around for insurance at wr and qb. With cam healthy and a deeper wr core why keep him around?

1.KB

2.Funchess

3.Ginn(brown & hill supplement)

4.Cotchery

5.Brown

6.Hill

I think cotchery sticks out another year simply for veteran presence for our young WRs. I see boykin and bersin as camp bodies, and I hold faith that Proehl could coach something into Hill after an off season plus of studying the playbook. Hopefully we can find a spot on the PS for Byrd.

he won't be cut. he'll be kept around for the same reason that harper will be kept around. leadership in the lockerroom. i will say that peanut likely brings more to the table than harper as far as mentoring, but the truth is we are awfully young in that secondary so they might keep harper around for at least another year.

cotchery is pretty much the guy in that meeting room for the WRs. he may be the weak link as far as production is concerned, but the fact that he brings needed leadership to a very young WR corps will keep him on the roster.

the WR corps heading into the season will likely be KB/funchess/ginn/cotchery/brown/boykin. i don't see anyone passing those guys up and i don't see us going more than 6 WRs.

Cotchery is a lousy WR, so the sooner he's off the team the better. I've seen him quit on routes, drop critical passes that hit him right in the hands, and be covered like glue by a defensive end all the way down the field, then quit at the end of that route with the DE still on his hip. Who wants a quitter I can outrun on this team? No thanks, and we finally have enough decent WRs to have the luxury of dumping dead weight. I couldn't care less if he's wise. Let Ricky spread the wisdom.

Bersin should go before Cotchery.

KB, Funchess, Brown, Ginn, Cotchery, Boykin is the corps I expect, with Hill as the darkhorse over Boykin.

hill will only stay if he either

1) lights it up (which i don't see happening) or

2) becomes a special teams ace (which i also don't see happening).

boykin gets a spot over hill because of special teams. when you get to that deep in the corps, you better offer something more than potential. you've got to be either a solid and needed vet presence or a help on special teams. hill isn't either of those.

Don't count on Funchess starting right away.  Benjamin was the #1 receiver by default last year.  Funchess doesn't have to get rushed on the field - Panthers have other options.  But all depends how he looks in training camp.  Definitely a possibility Cotchery starts the year at #2 and they work Funchess in as the year progresses.

Oh yea I agree.  I just said he's the dark horse because there's always the chance the light finally turns on for Hill, no matter how remote that chance is.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
