Saints better without Graham?

Even with the disgruntled TE franchise tag fiasco last season he put up 900 yards and 10 touchdowns. The year before he put up 1200 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is much more than just a red zone threat.

Let's not forget Kenny Stills who also put up 900 yards last year and is now gone. Who did they replace them both with? A RB who can't stay healthy.

No, Brees will not be better off. In fact I believe the Saints will finish last in the division as they traded the only thing going for them (offense) and revamped their horrible defense that will probably take a while to gel....this year you will see a Saints team that struggles to score and allows opposing teams to run up the score.

Wow, I have given out so much pie!

Anyway, I absolutely love this thread. As crazy of a thought it was it has produced some very nice discussion.

First off, no way someone outside of New Orleans (except other Saints fans) believe they are better off NEXT year without Jimmy G. Granted, maybe better off in the long run because of making moves to "reload" (rebuild) right now.

Secondly, they just got easier for us to destroy. Some of the best runners (Lynch/AP) don't do well against us. We have been built to stop the run and we are finally building on to be better vs the pass. (Which NO just got worse at)

Thirdly, did I mentioned I have given out major amounts of pie???

Kind of depends how you mean as better imo.

If getting rid of Jimmy Graham allows them to focus on the other aspects of their team rather than trying to outscore everyone, then possibly.  Especially if that leads to improvement in those areas.

However JG was a matchup problem.   Matchup problems cause defenses to do stuff they don't want to do.  I don't see how losing someone like that "improves" your team.

No Tony G and JG makes me happy tbh.  Kuech and TD going to have a hell of year.

They may or may not be better by losing graham and adding a center and first round pick (yes a first round pick is basically a FIRST round pick) but they will be a different team so it'll be interesting to see how they look.

I'm thinking they won't be ready to take the division back this year. If they are turning into more of a running / defensive team, they definitely don't have the defense to pull that off yet. We all know just adding some big name free agents on defense (Browner this year, Byrd last year) doesn't turn a bad defense around all of a sudden.

We already have the great defense to go with a run heavy offense and we are just building on the momentum we've been building the last 3 years. The Saints are trying to reverse a free fall after spending all there cap money on a win now strategy the last couple of years.

To clarify, this is exactly what I meant.  Are they instantly a better team by Jimmy not being on it?  Of course not.  But face it, they were $20 some million over cap and had major issues with their offense stalling last year.  A big part of that was how they went about running their offense (not to mention a slew of injuries).  When Jimmy had 16 TD's in 2013, he wasn't force fed the ball as Brees security blanket.  It was because he was a matchup nightmare, that you could only single cover.  Brees and the NO offense spread it around so much that they'd beat you feeding it to 5 different guys (hence why you could only afford to single cover Graham).  Last year, they force fed it to Graham and their offense sputtered.  Of course Graham is still a matchup nightmare, but he's still very limited in what he actually brings to the table.  He cannot block and he is not going to fight off blocks.  Keep in mind this is my "opinion" and I'm more curious how it plays out.  I don't think it's as much of a major loss as so many would like people to think.  Last thought I'll throw out, is would you rather have Graham or Olsen?  For my money, Olsen is much more of a complete TE.  1. He's cheaper. 2. He can block his a$$ off. 3.  He's a much better route runner.  4.  He fights of blocks and is a threat any where on the field.  5.  He can contribute more to special teams.

this is a good point, actually. who's even the best TE among our division rivals anymore? it almost has to be mercedes lewis by default
