Olsen not worried about the offense and redzone

A lot has been made about how the offense is struggling and for example they have struggled in the red zone. Olsen helps put this in perspective and said essentially what I said a few days ago.  This was just the first install of the redzone offense and there is no game planning at all. As he correctly points out, redzone offense is heavily situational  and changes from week to week.  There is way too much chicken little posting for the 5th day off training camp when they have had little work in pads, IMO.  And yes if they are struggling in week 5 then it is a serious issue.  But that still doesn't make the complainers correct  it simply means we didn't improve from training camp to the regular season.

"It was our first of install for red zone," Olsen said. "Red zone is such a week-by-week specific part of the game. It’s so game-plan oriented. You are going to have days where it just doesn’t match up. That’s something that sometimes comes with early camp installations (where there isn’t any game-planning). And when you are playing against a good defense, it’s hard enough. But we’ll be fine."

The offense rest on Oherr and the Left Tackle position.  That's whether red zone or not.

No it doesnt.  One player even the left tackle is not the reason we will struggle or not.  we can gameplan to help out whoever plays that position and likely run more to the right side which is typically where you have your big maulers anyway.  As for passing in the redzone, those plays are typically quick hitters, lobs and screens anyway so an offensive guy doesnt have to hold off defenders for more than 3 seconds.

I can't and won't trust the offense in the red zone until something gives...cough cough Shula.

We have the talent, and hopefully adding some more pieces will help execution.  But play-calling was mind-numbing for much of last year, which helped Gano's numbers, but not a lot else.

I hear Greg, and I want to believe him, but our team has been pretty poor at converting from the red zone for a while now.

Yeah that happens when you don't have good personnel at many spots.  The redzone just magnifies the issues since the defense can pack it in and you have less room to operate.  The problem has been the offense in general.  With the new additions and continued experience I think it will be different this year and going forward as we no longer have the worst offense in the league which is what was universally said about us last year.

A few thoughts on the offense.

We turned over half our starters on offense between the start of the 2013 season and the start of 2014.  Then during 2014, we turned over the offense some more, with 4 more new starters playing by the end of the season. Four of these new 2014 starters were rookies, and several others (Cotchery, Avant, Remmers) all were new to the Panthers..   We only have 4-5 starters on Offense who were starters or EVEN ON THE TEAM back in 2013.  Cam, Olsen, Kalil & Tolbert.  (Also Stewart sort of counts, though DWill was the listed starter.)

By contrast, for 2015, we'll be likely be starting 10 - 11 returning starters on offense, with only Oher and Funchess being the likely new guys at this point. (I think D. Williams will eventually start, but perhaps not right away.)

I think this continuity will be a factor in a significantly improved offense.  At this point, it's just my wishful thinking, but I hope I'm right.

    • I mean, I hear what y'all are saying, but Derrick could have been positive without being negative.  He essentially accused people of not seeing Bryce's improvement because of their desire to not be wrong. He could've kept it about Bryce and the team. For example, he could've said: "Bryce has made strides, and we believe in him. This coming season, his continued improvement will turn a lot of people into believers."  That would've been supportive of his teammate and sent a message to the doubters. That being said, his tact almost summoned and left the door ajar for more skepticism. That's my take anyway. Bryce has improved from the bottom to perhaps skirting the line between the bottom third and mid-third at best...after three seasons. We've all seen it. Yay! In my mind, Bryce has still got a long way to go and a short time to get there, but my expectations are top five--at least top 10--always! Yes, I am a fan, so there's that, but I don't believe it's unreasonable to expect excellence. Hopefully the Panthers FO has the same mindset (and that doesn't even necessarily have anything to do with what we gave up to acquire him). That is the lens I'm looking through. Derrick Brown has his homer glasses on. He just needs to be more diplomatic and thoughtful with his words in my opinion, but I get it that he's a good teammate.
    • I have no doubt the Canes will come out like gangbusters, huge bounce back from game one - my only concern is Freddie, if he lets in a couple of softies and Dobes stays hot we could be in trouble.
