Emergence of a man named Ealy

There were 4 preseason games--are we going to pick the ones we want to prove that he was not erratic?. Regardless, 2 preseason games does not establish any player.

no doubt but some of yall have to realize those first two games are for getting back into football shape more than anything.

You can't replicate game intensity at practice.

Kony Ealy is the most improved player on the team from last year.

We have had the rotation at RDE since Hardy left, and if Ealy is able to command the position himself then our defense will have improved.

Looks like G-man's still doesnt have a bad draft pick yet.

Yep.  "If" being the operative word here.  I hope it becomes "when " or "now that" very quickly.  Improvement is subjective, hard to gauge vs. a variety of talent.  He is showing signs of emerging, I will give him that.  Hope we all think so in a few weeks.

He better break out because I'm scared of Johnson starting off slow again. He is in a similar situtation like last year, hurt with few few practice/reps going into the season.

good point. We need balance at DE to keep the offense from loading CJ's side with blocking and running left.

This is what Mike Rucker said about Ealy in today's Observer:

Rucker, who knows a thing or two about the position, made a case for Ealy.

“He needs to take that step. He needs to understand the responsibility of being that total package and having teammates counting on him, and him ready to spring out of the box and be consistent,” Rucker said. “I think he’s shown flashes. If he’s consistent, he can hold that right side down.”

He did not say, "He has taken that step."  He said, "IF he is consistent..." Not "now that he is consistent...."

Again, fingers crossed, but a preseason game or two does not mean much, in the grand scheme of the defense.

I remember telling everyone he'd be okay. It's a pleasant surprise that he's making strides this quickly. It's the NFL norm that DEs take 3+ years to develop.  Took Hardy 3, Johnson 3, expect Peppers. He's a freak of nature. Ealy could have a 9 sack season if our interior linemen don't go down. Minimal sacks I'd say around 6. He could see double digit sacks. He's young,  dedicated, and hungry.

Who was it that wanted to part ways with him? lol man that's hilarious.

    • So the last guy who had the job got hired by his former team directly into a role he has no direct experience in?
    • Hard to pass up millions for a couple of days work per week for a coaching gig in the NFL that is 60-80 hours each week during the season and a more relaxed 50 hours a week during the off season. Yeah, I'd love to see him as our DC but hard to see him giving up the cushy job there if he gets it. And he's going to be a great commentator for the network.
    • Really, I think that is where negotiations come in. If you've got a QB getting you to 10 wins but statistically he's not a great performer, then you say look you can take $22 million or you can try it on the market. Because let's face it, out there, any leadership skills that we're seeing aren't going to be on the table, it's just going to be performance and that lands him in the QB2 market, which is much, much less lucrative (although any of us would love that money).  No one is saying that Bryce will be a $50 million QB, barring something short of a miraculous jump. I'm just saying that if we are winning somehow with him at the helm, then it would be fuging stupid to dive back into the rookie pool all over again. Let's say we do hit the 10 win mark, heck, let's call it 11 and a second round in the playoffs. I think we can all say that would be a really uplifting result and one that should be doable if we have good play. What do we do then? Here's what I would offer if I were Morgan and Tepper. $25 million a year for 3 years, each year with up to $10 million in incentives for touchdowns, wins, playoff depth, being under 10 interceptions, completing a full season, passing yardage milestones, taking less than 15 sacks. Look, Bryce isn't a Ferrari, he isn't a Corvette, or a mid-level BMW. He's probably a new Toyota Sienna that will definitely get you somewhere and bring the whole team along with it, no fuss but not a lot of pizazz.  And really, it's about the destination, not about what drove you there.
