Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera would like to see his franchise quarterback run a few times less than he did in Sunday's 20-9 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Cam Newton finished with 14 carries for 35 yards. According to ESPN Stats and Information, 12 were designed rushes, tying for the second most in Newton's career.

Ummm, Ron ol' boy, Cam Newton running is wrapped into the Shula package.  Its the only way at all possible for Shula's offense to have ANY chance at success.

So under your choice of OC, by saying you want Cam to "run less", what you're really saying is you want Shula's offense to "score less".

I don't really disagree with this. The problem though is, Cam Newton has been regularly having to takeover games for our offense since we drafted him. Here we are 4 years later, and still little has changed. I like Ron, I want him to succeed here, but his ineptitude when it comes to the offensive side of the ball may end up costing him his job.

So we got the best mobile qb and we dont want him to run? If you want him to pass more get better receivers . Tedd ginn as our #1 doesnt cut it and funchess is not as good as we made him out to be

I agree with the sentiment, but I think it's far too early to say Funchess isn't what we thought he was. He made some good catches Sunday and was a second round pick. Let's give the kid a full season before we talk about him "not having it"

He's also young as hell. One of the youngest players from the draft last year. I have high hopes for the kid but I think it will be a few years before everything clicks.

Oh wow, I didn't realize he just turned 21 in May.

Funchess didn't even get the start in game 1, how anyone could make any sort of judgements on his development right now is beyond me.

Yep. People don't realize how young Funchess is.

When Funchess enters his third season in the league, he will be the same age Benjamin was as a rookie.

    • I can't tell you what other's expect from him before they will start believing in him. I think for some, they will never be able to overcome his size. I think that is the fundemental problem for them which means they will never be happy with him behind center. For others, it seems he will have to be in the top 10% in pretty much every catagory and do that all seaon for them to start believing in him. Not everyone of course. There are people on this board that, while have doubts, can still acknowledge his good plays and are willing to give him another season. Those folks I would assume just want consistency - and wins. I could be off on all the above but that's kind of how I see it. And while you didn't ask, I will say I'm glad they picked up his 5th year option. He earned it. I do not think he should be signed to a long term contract yet. I do think he will develope in a franchise QB and will get the Panthers back into the playoffs and win them but I know I could be wrong. Next year will be the big test. If the offense continues to improve and they get back to the playoffs because of the offense, it will be time to sign him long term. If it's a repeat of this year, then it's time to look elsewhere for a QB. Like I said though, I believe he can be the guy so would be surprised if he doesn't make it.
    • Well since I am so biased, why don’t you tell us what he has to do to earn the trust of everyone that doubts him? If you say he has already done it, we really will never agree.
    • Also, do you think it a bit odd that the media has ignored it? Maybe they haven’t. But I am not aware of it being written or talked about.
