PFF grades for week 6

Carolina Panthers

– QB Cam Newton (+4.9) posted his fourth game over +1.0 and a nice rebound out of the bye week after his lowest-graded game of the season in Week 4. Connecting eight times on throws aimed more than 10 yards downfield before taking advantage of the Seattle coverage bust on the game-winner, Newton was on target with the majority of his patented fastballs.

– It was a rough afternoon for RT Mike Remmers (-5.2), as he was beaten handily by Seattle DE Cliff Avril. Giving up six hurries (four to Avril, one was erased by penalty), Remmers proved mostly susceptible to the bull rush. The most damaging example being at 4:20 of the first quarter, where Avril drove through him to get a piece of Newton’s arm, sending a fluttering ball into the waiting arms of Kam Chancellor.

– DT Kawann Short (+5.4) not only continued his run of big grades and maintained his place among the league’s leading interior defenders, he also filled up the stat sheet. His six total pressures (two sacks, a hit and three hurries) were joined by a batted pass, three defensive stops and two more pass rush wins where the pass was away before he could register pressure.

Top performers:

C Ryan Kalil (+5.5)
DT Kawann Short (+5.4)
QB Cam Newton (+4.9)
G Andrew Norwell (+4.3)
LB Luke Kuechly (+3.5)

Isn't that Remmer's first bad game all year by their standards? He really had an issue with Seattle last year too if I'm not mistaken. Sounds like Avril is his kryptonite.

Still glad we have him.

You're 100% right. Remmers has had a very good year except for this game. Williams is due back very soon, so it's some bad timing on his part.

Sheeeet work him out on the left side and spell Oher. If anyone on the line needs replacing it's him, and I'm not even complaining because he's been serviceable this year.

Oher has been solid in pass coverage but he struggles in run blocking.  All the running damage the Panthers did was to the right side.  Remmers struggled in pass coverage.  Even on the Olsen TD to win the game you can see he was holding Michael Bennett.  Our tackles, while better than they were with Bell and Nate Chandler starting, are still in need of improvement.

    • Do you even know what the term "below average" means? Because I'm genuinely not sure if you do. There are 32 QB's in the league, which means to be playing "above average" he'd have to be the 15th best QB at the league, and even then, that's in essence the "average NFL QB" still. Even going by these rankings, which have him 20th, that by itself is the definition of "below average", and that's before you consider there are multiple QB's ranked below him in this list that I'd 100% trade him for in a heartbeat. Again, no matter what you think the eye test tells you, he's made 28 starts and has a grand total of FOUR games over 247 yards.  Drake Maye has made 10 starts, all with a significantly worse group of pass catchers than Bryce has had, and he already has 3 games over that number himself. I don't need to see or know anything else beyond that to determine he is a below average QB in this league so far and I don't know how anyone can honestly argue against that.  If he was a Lamar Jackson type putting up 75+ yards rushing on a consistent basis, then you can look at those passing yards differently, but that's not the case here. Could he still improve and get to average or better?  Of course. But you're trying to extrapolate a few throws/drives/moments from a handful of games and trying to say that makes him even an average, if not above average, QB in this league.  Which is just nonsense when the players you're comparing him to have played at that level for full seasons or their entire careers.
    • My meds from the stone removal, so if I get extra grouchy. Ya know. 😂🤣😂
    • Who says no to the following.  Trade KK and Morrow for a draft pick of some sort.  Sign the following:  Bennett 8m AAV Ekblad 8m AAV Boeser 7.5m AAV Marner 13m AAV Cap numbers work after the trade of KK and Morrow.
