Gettleman gaming the Comp Pick situation / Tillman's injury?

Update: not sure how I managed to post this on the main forum instead of All Pro... I've not even been drinking!  But I could claim the Panthers' amazing season has got me intoxicated!  LOL

Don't want to post this on the main forum because the article I'm about to quote is from a somewhat questionable source.  But it was intriguing, and I thought folks on All Pro might be able to discuss it sensibly.  Also, the question may now be moot with Bene's injury.  If Tillman is healthy enough to play against the Giants, he will be needed...

But anyway, to the point.  There was someone at C-S-R on Friday who posted a review of our current potential Comp Pick situation, basically suggesting that the team might not be playing Tillman in order to ensure we get the 3rd round Comp Pick for Hardy.   It doesn't seem past Gettleman to do something like this..., but as I said, it may now be totally irrelevant with Bene going to IR.

Anyway, regardless, it does have some interesting info about the Comp Pick rules that I hadn't known.  (And there are some very helpful links to sites that give rules re: Comp Picks and track Comp Pick possibilities.)

Prior to Week 1, the following UFAs were counting for/against our Compensatory Pick eligibility:

For: Byron Bell, Tennessee (7th round), Greg Hardy (3rd/4th round)
Against: Kurt Coleman (7th), Charles Tillman (7th)

Kurt Coleman and Byron Bell have already qualified for the Comp Pick formula having started in 12 games and playing 99% of possible snaps. They cancel each other out. Greg Hardy, despite missing 4 games due to suspension, has already played over 50% of his possible snaps over 12 games and would need to play just 2 more games to ensure his qualification for the Comp Pick Formula... which could potentially be a huge 3rd round pick in 2016.

That leaves Charles Tillman.

Tillman had played 533 snaps and was on his way to qualifying for the Comp Pick formula. His qualification would have canceled out Greg Hardy's potential qualification, leaving Carolina likely not to receive any of the 32 compensatory picks in 2016.

However, Tillman wasn't looking too good in the Green Bay game (our 8th game) and apparently re-injured his right knee at the end of the Tennessee game (our 9th game). This is not a new right knee injury for Tillman, as he previously dealt with issues in the same knee in 2013. This means that the Panthers' front office knew about this injury prior to signing him. Tillman has been listed as doubtful on the injury report and will miss his 4th consecutive game on Sunday against Atlanta.

In addition to this, Carolina signed Cortland Finnegan prior to the Week 13 game at New Orleans. His signing (and fit as a slot CB) takes up the 8th gameday DB spot. The Panthers traditionally keep 8 DBs active on gameday. This means that even if Tillman got healthy, he would either have to take a gameday slot filled by special teamers Teddy Williams or Colin Jones... or remain inactive. Bene Benwikere has played the outside CB role in place of Tillman. Many observers feel that Bene' is better suited for the outside CB role than the slot CB role he has been playing.

The Panthers have played 822 defensive snaps (68.5 per game). If that pace is kept up, a total of 1,096 snaps would be played. If Tillman is held out of the remainder of the regular season due to the re-injury, he will have only played in 9 of 16 games, and he will have likely have played less than 50% of the possible defensive snaps.

What do you all think?  Do you think G'man was sitting Tillman to ensure we got the Hardy pick?  It may no longer matter, but it's interesting to consider Gettleman's strategies...

I doubt G-man's strategy is what is described here.  You want to win a Super Bowl.  Your best chance to win a Super Bowl is to have your best players on the field.  Tillman is obviously one of our better corners.  If he's ready to suit up and play he will play.  Why play for a pick or even have your drafting strategy revolving around comp picks?  Especially since the draft is a crap shoot.  You may or may not get a good pick in the 3rd.
