Richard Sherman's 4 Ways to Improve Officiating

Recommended Posts

Very well written article. Sherman writes for SI once in a while and it's interesting to get articles someone who plays NFL rather than some fat middle age guy who gets paid for what we do for free.

TLDR

1. Simplify the Rules

2. Add an 8th official

3. Change around the locations of officials

4. Improve player/ref communications (this one is interesting)

So, do you agree?

With today's technology they could have officials watching various camera angles and if something is obviously different than the on field call, then that could weigh in on the call.  I wouldn't use this in lieu of on-field officials because you would lose a very important element of the game.  It would only come into play on absolute controversial plays.  Another possibility is having an offense and defense head ref.

The most egregious thing is the catch/no catch rule like Thomas said. Every week it seems a game changes based on it.

Mans when they review a play that was called incorrectly and STILL uphold the call, that's maddening as hell and it has happened to us several times.

...so Richard Sherman wants better officiating? Is that because of those bullshit calls that went against Seattle Opponents or because of some call that didn't go Seattle's way?

He brings up one of each.  He also is mostly defending the refs but saying that things should be done to make the job easier on them.  The only negative thing he says about them really is that some will not explain a call to the players so they know what they did wrong.

I have always had a soft spot for him due to JNO.  I think he is spot on, especially number 1 but each makes the game better as a whole imo.  Officials are in a catch 22 with those overly complex rules.

Why would they need to explain to players what they did wrong? That's not their job. It's the players/team's coach's job to understand the rules and play by them.

    • Varying degrees all around but it starts at the top. That is where the buck stops. It has been 8 years of stupid, long before Morgan came back. Or Tillis was hired. Made it to the top of stupid mountain in 2023. Stayed in stupid limbo for a while, now we are prepping to scale the next mountain. In this case, I like those guys’ roster building better than what we have had so I am okay with them as our current pawns in the game of Bryce.
    • Don't let me gas him up too much, but I hear this and that...... I seen a wide body man with a quick burst, that's able to shed blocks and if extends his long arms its over. He tore up the OL in the senior, you seen about 10 plays and the dog walking OLman. There's other plays of him doing the same, just have to deal with fetus talking over the plays. Plus there's this-  https://x.com/PFF_College/status/2018385471068332410?lang=en     I hope he's ready, cause Id like to see him starting and doing his thang with dbrown, nic, and Phillips.
    • I mean there is relevance to that. But I think much of it has to do with the fact that he is clearly likeable. But does that translate to a coach taking his position to the next level like those that have had staying power for many years like Spoelstra? And not for nothing but does how much someone is liked even matter? Across leagues with the Panthers Ron Rivera and Marty Hurney were universally well liked by players. Dave Canales is very well liked. I say you are what your record says. And the record says you got your ass handed to you by a fellow expansion team in the Magic in a game that was over at halftime and that same team went toe to toe with our nemesis who has been handing us L's for over a year now. And if Bam doesn't get his leg swept by LaMelo do we even get past the Heat? Again. It just all boils down to personal standards. I think newer and younger fans will love this. I just want to actually win a real playoff game fam 🤷‍♂️
