Ponder for a moment...

We get Benjamin back, Benwikere back, maybe Silatolu back in a backup role;  our rookies like Funchess, Thompson, Artis-Payne et al will have a pro season under their belts; we could be in a position to see more from projects like Wegher and Norwood; we get another Gettleman draft plus a free agency period that will likely have more freedom than past seasons.  Oh and did I mention that our two most important players are locked up long term?

There's plenty of reasons to be optimistic about next season.

I also dont think we have given up on Stephen Hill yet.  Or have we ?

The way I see it the Panthers are at least a year ahead of schedule in their on field performance.

Gettleman is still working with one hand tied behind his back when it comes to the Hurney contracts still on the books.

Next year will be his first without that burden and based on his performance to date when it comes to drafts and free agency, there is every reason to believe the team fielded will be stronger than ever before.

Of course, everyone will pick those teams to be good next year.

However, like many teams on the Panthers schedule this year, who turned out bad. Many of them will no doubt disappoint. And you can be sure, "media" will forget this and call them lousy.

Moral: If the Panthers beat 'em, they ain't good.

Wonder, if anyone in the National Media has noticed or figured any of this out yet (smack on random numb nuts forehead)!?

Speaking of having a good team.....If the draft next year holds form for the Panthers, you can expect 5 or 6 players to make the roster from the draft. So here is a bit of a brain teaser for you.

Name 5 players you would replace on the 53 man roster.

Ben Jacobs - could be replaced by Mayo

Cortland Finnegan - need to draft a CB

Fozzy Whitaker (CAP to replace on active roster)

Roman Harper - need to draft a safety

Charles Johnson (if he does not pick it up in the playoffs)

I know some say receiver is a need, but when healthy, I like our receivers with Kelvin back. But we could replace Jericho Cotchery, as next year Bersin could fill the sure handed 3 down receiver.

Kelvin Benjamin

Tedd Ginn

Devin Funchess

Philly Brown

Jericho Cotchery

Brenton Bersin

Kevin Norwood - imo would be replaced by Kelvin returning

So I guess that is how I see the draft playing out.

DE, WR, S, CB, and probably OL depth

I've also heard that the salary cap could increase to $160M next year, we are currently $21M under the cap, and we will clear up around $10m when CJ is either cut or restructured.  we could be 30-40M under the cap

So we may be in position to not only lock up our core players but also make some decent additions, which are much needed on the D-line

Not so sure you can figure on 5 or 6 rookies making this team next year. It is getting harder every year for rooks to make it onto the roster. You may be able to make a case for the top 3ish picks, but any other pick is going to be fighting a huge uphill battle to make this team. Especially if we add any FA.

Now I know this is just one mans thoughts. But IMO, it is going to continue to get harder for those lower picks to make the team. Let alone those undrafted ones. And that is a really good problem to have.

That's how Gettleman saw it last year, so he traded up for who he wanted.

Won't surprise me if we see more of that this season.
