Voth looking for Gettleman mea culpas

Recommended Posts

We're you wrong about Dave Gettleman?

Earlier this month, I used simple Twitter searches to find examples of Gettleman criticisms that now look regrettable in hindsight. With the Panthers now headed to the Super Bowl and seemingly set up to make similar runs, I've been thinking it could be entertaining to let folks poke fun at themselves.

Dozens of responses like that came in, so let's open up the floor.

If you've been loud wrong about Gettleman and some of the moves he's made, are you willing to fess up with specific examples? Even better — do those opinions still live somewhere on the Internet?

If you'd like to share a mea culpa, you can tweet BBR — or for those who'd want more than 140 characters, you can use the form below.

Depending on the feedback, I may toss the best responses into a follow-up post. It'll be fun and maybe even a little therapeutic.

mmm #89 still stings.  I love Getts and what he's done, but there's a great void in my panther soul for #89 and I sincerely hope we find a way to retire him a Panther.

We see things differently in this regard.  I loved Smitty, but loving the Panthers more it's clear to me and has been since his release, we're a better team without him.  The chemistry is different and it's allowed our all pro QB to flourish and take the leadership role he needed to take.

It was a painful move and shocking to many, but the long term gain is evident and because of that, I moved on long ago.  But certainly wish Steve well.

Just go back to any 2014 preseason thread here and you have your article Voth.

Don't even have to go back that far.

The start of 2015 free agency had people flying off the rails.

When the Jimmy Graham trade was announced, people thought the Seahawks would be unstoppable.

I had criticisms of how he'd handled our o-line going into 2014, but it turned out to be mostly on Rivera for not starting the right guys who Gettleman had put on the roster. Silatolu had no business starting games for us if there was any sort of healthy alternative.

The problem with this is that there is absolutely no way to know what the result would have been if a different move was made. Most everything he has done has worked out well, but it's possible something else would have worked out better. Nearly everyone seems to be a better player in a Carolina uniform than on another team. The culture and leadership in the locker room as well as the coaching is a main part of the reason it seems like everything Gettleman touches turns to gold in my opinion. Mike Mitchell, Ted Ginn and Kurt Coleman have all been scrubs everywhere they went except for Carolina. This team elevates the play of the players around them. That's the real magic.

Also, Morgan Moses was rated as a top 10 RT in the NFL this year by PFF.

It's also quite possible that Rivera and Co had to get those guys ready to play. Actual coaching. The only player that pertains to is Norwell who was starting by the 7th game.

It was meant to be Kugbila and Chandler. Credit Brandon Beane and the scouting department for finding Norwell and Remmers.

If some team were smart, they would give Brandon Beane a GM position. He has cleaned up a lot of mistakes over the past few years.

My favorite kind of Gettleman hate is when he was signing players like Teddy Williams or Kyle Love to add depth while not spending a lot of money, and the idiots of this forum would jump in the thread to post the infamous "Superb Owl?" or call the player "trash".

Teddy Williams recovered Peterson's muffed punt and Love had a sack in the NFCCG, and yeah, now we're going to the Superb Owl.

Good call guys.

I never viewed posting Superb Owl in a thread as meaning anything other than..."Gettleman signed who?" Meaning the poster didn't know who the player was. It was sarcastic saying this is the missing piece. I never viewed as a this guy sucks. Sure it's snarky.

But calling someone trash is always silly. Mainly because none of us have any idea. Or at least I don't.

Only because of injury. If Silatolu never got hurt you realize there is a chance he'd still be starting today.

    • Just another 1st round QB that never paid off for the team that drafted them or traded for them. It's been like this since the SB began. 36 QBs have now won the SB & only 13 of them have been 1st rounders winning with their original team. Namath 1968, Griese 1972, Bradshaw 1974, McMahon 1985, Simms 1986, Aikman 1992, Elway 1997, Roethlisberger 2005, P.Manning 2006, E.Manning 2007, Rodgers 2010, Flacco 2012, & Mahomes 2019. Only 3 have taken longer than 5 seasons as the starter to win a SB.  4  6  5  4  6  4  15  2  9  4  3  5  2 [the years it takes for these 1st round QBs] 5  1  4  1  3  1  1  2  3  4  [10 of the 36 have won a chip with their 1st team that haven't been drafted in the 1st round. These are the years it took them as a starter] What stands out? Only 2 of these QBs have lost their first championship appearance. Elway took 4 years as a 1st rounder & Hurts took 2 years as a 2nd rounder. Of the 10 non-1st round QBs, 2 are 2nd rounders, 3 are 3rd rounders, 5 are 6th rounders or later. Please stop wasting time on drafting 1st round QBs with such a high failure rate. The remaining 13 QBs are traded or free agent signings. Stafford, Favre, Young, Williams and Dawson are the 5 trades. Peyton Manning & Tom Brady also won for teams as free agents on a short stay as well as being drafted. The lesson here is don't waste your franchise on farming up 1st rounders for the league, and steer clear of trading for a franchise QB. Stick to finding that championship QB by drafting them outside of the 1st round or through free agency.
    • I lost most of the respect I had for Fox in 2010. He should have resigned if he hated the job that much. Instead he stuck for his paycheck and let stuff go to hell.    I burned out on Ron too but my deal breaker issue with him was away from football and after he was gone from the Panthers. He may have been out of his depth but never quit on us.
    • From where they were one year ago to now, pretty incredible. I mean, say what you want about Vrabel he is no Jerrod Mayo.
