It would be sick if we still had Barnidge.

Along this same thought process I was just telling my dad the other day that, IF he feel to us in the mid rounds(3-5), I'd love to see us draft Gronkowski's little brother. If for no other reason, can you imagine a Gronkowski and Olsen line up in 2 TE sets?!?!?! With KB, and Ginn/Philly,that could be absolutely FILTHY!!!!!!

yea its crazy how barnidge of all people just blew up

Not crazy. He showed it here in Carolina. I recall fans wanting to see more of Barnidge as he made some nice down field plays in the passing game when he was given a chance. Fans wanting to see another pass catching TE since Wesley Walls had hope for Barnidge. Unfortunately, Fox was not big on employing an offense with a pass catching tight end.

In 2008 and 2009, Barnidge would spend his time with Josh McCown catching passes and running routes.

The Browns did not even know what they had in Barnidge until McCown made it known. Then McCown leaned on Barnidge from his Panthers days and everyone saw what Barnidge was always capable of producing in the passing game.

It was always there. Just another case of short sighted coaches not taking a shot on a weapon and going with the 'safe' option.

No way, Barnidge is good but he'd be a square peg in our offense.  If you watched him at all this year, the guy has almost no ability to block, and that works when you use a guy in the same way the Saints used Graham, but when you get him in an offense like ours where every person on offense needs to be able to run block, a TE can not be a void as a blocker.

Barnidge has been employed in the NFL for years for his ability to block. You do not last on a John Fox led team at TE if you do not know how to block. All he did with the Browns for the past few seasons was block. McCown lobbied for Barnidge and the Browns finally took a chance on his receiving skills.

Let's remember that Hurney wanted to keep Barnidge and move him into the #2 role with Olsen while they moved on from Shockey. Barnidge was starting in 2 TE sets opposite Olsen for 5 games. Barnidge came up with big plays whenever Cam targeted him in the passing game even though they were limited opportunities.

Gettleman ignored Gary Barnidge after the 2012 season in favor of another WR in Domenik Hixon from his time with the Giants. Barnidge was a miss by Gettleman that resulted in a series of misses at the WR and TE position since. This time the answer was actually on the roster.

Kris Mangum. Worst offensive TE, how many years did he start for? 3 or 4?

Mangum was an excellent blocker, which is what Fox wanted. Notice that Jeff King, another strong blocker, followed, although King had some great hands as well.

Barnidge has always had great hands.  His issue was he could block to save his ass.  Olsen may not be the best blocking TE in the league but he has improved since he got here.  If Barnidge had learned to block while he was here.  He would still be here.  Dickson is good but not nearly the hands Barnidge has but blocks well.  Since we a run first team TEs gotta block that is why we have Dickson and not Barnidge.

BTW when he was here I was on is bandwagon.

Olsen is in no way, shape, or form a good blocker and Barnidge is better, but Olsen fits exactly with what this offense needs. Hartsock was TE#2 for years after Shockey because of his blocking and Barnidge is a better blocker than Olsen, so my guess is that he wasn't a good enough practice player to earn much time on the field.

Olsen is in not the best blocking TE we have had but Barnidge could block my baby sister.  I don't know where you get your info.  He might be good in Cleveland but he sucked here as a blocking TE.

As another poster mentioned, I doubt Fox would have kept him if he was as bad as you imply (see Mangum and King as examples) and his performance in Cleveland supports that. I really think he just wasn't/isn't a strong practice performer.
