Eric Davis: Kerry Collins quit on the Panthers and didn't get as much heat

“Everyone forgets he’s in his fifth year, he’s a young quarterback, a young man, who's still learning who he is," said NFL Network studio analyst Eric Davis. “(He’s someone) who’s in the spotlight, who is the face of a franchise, and there is a lot of responsibility that goes along with it.

“I played in Carolina with a quarterback who couldn't handle that responsibility, who quit the team — and he didn't get criticized as much for that as Cam gets criticized for dabbing in an end zone. And I know that for a fact."

Yeah, I know these Cam defender threads are annoying. I just thought this was pretty funny because it is definitely true.

before my time

Someone who remembers that season could expand, but basically we drafted Kerry Collins after trading down from #1 in 1995, went to the NFCCG in 1996, and then his alcoholism caught up with him.

He came into the head coach's office, told him "his heart wasn't in it" and quit.

After we let him go, his heart miraculously healed enough to play for a couple of other teams.

He was quarterbacking the Giants when the Ravens pounded them in their first Super Bowl.

Shame, looked like a good kid too. tsk tsk

Not that good. He definitely pulled some dumbass stunts.

And after he quit on us but somehow found the courage to play somewhere else, he was bitterly hated in Panther fandom.

Heck, he might have been the most hated figure in Panthers history if not for Rae Carruth.

    • I don’t know about floor in a team defense sense but we needed more.  The floor that I am familiar with is our QBs floor and it is so low that every other part of the team needs to be beefed up.     We tried our best to improve these things and I think we did improve the defense and we at least kept the offense  from sinking from no LT.  And ostensibly helped the receivers too.   So we kept a window open that we at least have a chance to improve our record by a game of two.  Which would probably give us the division.

    • Yeah. I am one of. those who think a JAG RB can eat with really good blocking. (Brooks is most important in my mind, in tbe passing game and that is what we’ll lose without him)  There are a lot of aspects to this. The big one that caused us to struggle is Young and his arm scared no one.  Best back, best blocking still cannot defeat a really good defense if they are not forced to respect the pass.  And teams did not.    But, a strong OL and running game Can get us over against weaker defenses.  And if Bryce still doesn’t scare anyone we can still win some games. Like last year  So it is really important to tend to that OL.   Get that straight and see if in his fourth year he can finally back defenses off. That is what if is all about this year to me, on the Bryce front.
