We need a DE... so whom?

So basically you are saying we are up against it. Can't afford a top tier DE while tagging Norman, with KK coming next,  then Star. JPP will be at least 10 mil (if the Giants let him walk), and Coples (meh). So whats this mean??  CJ at a cut rate and hope for the best? Have to do better then this.

Draft a DE in the 1st round and sign a productive vet DE like Robert Ayers, William Hayes or Derrick Shelby for around $4-5M per year for 2 years. Kony, Addison, 1st round DE(Ogbah/Dodd), solid vet(Hayes/Ayers/Shelby) and Delaire is a quality DE rotation that we don't have to break the bank for.

I don't see guys like Ayers, Selvie, Coples making this D better. I certainly don't see a tail end of the 1st round being that guy  either. At some point you gotta spend some money. I get it that KK and Star are up for new deals after next season, but to take this D to the next level is going to cost some money this year.

I honestly would not be surprised if both Allen & Johnson are back next season assuming they're both under cheap contracts.  Both actually played quite well in the playoffs.  They can use the off-season to get back to 100%, get back into football shape, I would like to see Johnson slim down a bit and get some speed back.

There's no way galette will be a panther with all his troubles off the field.

The guy caught on camera whipping a woman with a belt? I can't think of any reason why we wouldn't bring him in. Seems like a perfect fit.

Vernon would be unbelievable but he'll be out of our price range. Give me Mario Williams. Miscast in a 3-4, from NC and is older so probably would not require as big of a contract.

Wouldn't mind CJ or Allen at a reduced rate. Coples for depth too. Bring in a draft pick to develop in the meantime and grow with Ealy.

I do believe our guy, at the end of the day will be Quinton Coples. He makes too much sense and fits DG's mold. He's was forced to be an edge rusher in the NYJ's 3-4 and that is not his best fit. Dude is a serious edge rusher that belongs in a 4-3. He's about to be waived (Dollar Store), 25 years old (core), from Kinston, NC and played at UNC.

DG loves to build from the trenches out, so he will be scouring hard at the DE's in FA and the draft. Ealy made huge leaps, but we do need a veteran, and Coples should be that guy.

Guys like Vernon, Williams and JPP are going to be too pricey for us. It makes more sense for us to lock KK up this offseason, rather than trying to do it next  year with he and Star. Only way we go after Vernon, is if the JNo talks head south and we can't retain him.  I know we can use the franchise tag, but his age might have him looking for something more long-term/payday and become a disruption if he gets tagged. I doubt this happens, but who knows what Josh wants, moving forward.  If this did unfortunately happen, I'd think DG would go all-in on Vernon. Gettleman definitely values the D-Line more than the secondary.

I'm more than okay moving forward with Coples/Ealy as starters and rotating Addison & Delaire with a rookie 1st/2nd rounder.

Any idea's??  I'd say Mario Williams, but his salary is 11 millon plus. Only five sacks last year in a system that didn't fit.  He is 31 an played at NC State. He could turn it around here. Don't see D.G paying that kind of jack though. Can't wait for a draft pick to develop. What options in FA do we have?

Word is he's about to get cut by the Bills, he would be the most ideal pickup after cut/restructure Charles Johnson.

A motivated Williams on a good Panthers team should do the Trick to make our D-line elite next season, keep Norman and Short and move Bene and Boston to starting Positions and we have a rock solid Defense.

That would only leave OT and an attempt to upgrade our WR's wouldn't be bad either.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
