We need a DE... so whom?

Vernon is going to get a huge contract. By paying Vernon we'll have to lose one guy from our core group. Is Olivier Vernon worth losing a core guy for?

I initially laughed off the whole Mario Williams thing at first just because everyone likes to always connect the dots to a players hometown but the more I think about and check out the defensive end prospects the more I want Mario. Mario checked out last year but with Rex in charge I don't blame him, he had a great year in 2014 and at 31 still has a few years left. I say we go hard after Mario!

Mario Williams / Rodney McLeod / Trumaine Johnson

It'll be the Panthers cheaper version of the Broncos Ward / Ware / Talib trio since we already have Norman.

We can still grab a DE in the draft but there will be a lot less pressure to grab one early. This draft isn't very deep imo and DG may even trade up to get 1st round value ("rather have a dime than 2 nickles"). Either way that DE will need time, I think it'll be crucial to move on Mario quickly if Buffalo does release him.

Why not move to get OT then, If the theory is true that pass rusher wins you the game then opposing team will also have this advantage how are we gonna defend against elite pass rushers.

I can't believe I'm going to say this but Oher was fantastic for us this season. I don't want to jinx it but I feel like we're ok at LT for awhile.

As for RT my guess is that the plan was for Daryl Williams to play this season but after his injury they didn't want to disrupt the chemistry of the OL. Still blows my mind they just hung Remmers out to dry against Miller. In my opinion that has more to do with game planning than Remmers, because no one in the world thought Remmers would stop Miller.

Any idea's??  I'd say Mario Williams, but his salary is 11 millon plus. Only five sacks last year in a system that didn't fit.  He is 31 an played at NC State. He could turn it around here. Don't see D.G paying that kind of jack though. Can't wait for a draft pick to develop. What options in FA do we have?

William Hayes. He replaced Chris Long as starter in STL plus he's from NC and went to college in NC. Got 3 sacks against SEA this year.

I mean, I don't expect us to go with a top/high paid one right as we're potentially disposing of CJ even if we have cash to spend.

But if we do spend to a degree, I could see a 5-7 mil a year type.  Robert Ayers fits the mold I can see DG going after.

Great call on William Hayes. I expect the Panthers to be in on him early. Also watch out for Arthur Miley. The team loves him. I also expect them to use a first round pick on a DE. I expect next years rotation to look like:

Charles Johnson

Kony Ealy

William Hayes

First Round Pick

Mario Addison

Arthur Miley

Depends on year and need. We are not finding a starting DE or OT at 30.

Why? Cuz folks say so? At what point does the talent end? 16? 20? There are no talented players left at 30? When did this phenomenon start?

Gman pretty much expects his first 3 picks to push for not only playing time, but starter minutes. So he thinks there is talent after the mid 1st round.

If you know what you are doing. You increase your odds of making good decisions. I know...sounds insane doesn't it?

I have a question for people who still have CJ penciled in our lineup next year... Why?

He's two years removed from a Pro-Bowl quality season. The past two years have been subpar. This year was one of the worst ever for a player making his kind of salary.

Even if we restructured that massive, God-awful contract, why would we want CJ at the price it would take to keep him? If we restructure, we're still looking at a cap hit of at least $10M (and almost certainly much more). We'd also be extending his contract in order to restructure, deferring some cap hit until later years.... Not a good thing, since it would tie our hands from signing our young stars to extensions next year. CJ had 12 tackles and 1 sack in 9 games this year! We are clearly better offer devoting those resources elsewhere.

If I had to choose between Jared Allen and CJ, I would honestly take Allen. At least he SOMETIMES was able to pressure the QB and make plays.

I'd bet everything I own and all I can borrow on us not carrying six DEs on the active roster next year or any other year.  Not gonna happen.

Not saying all will be active but this year we carried 6 DE at one point. CJ, Allen, Ealy, Delaire, Horton, and Addison.

I'll be very surprised if both CJ and Allen are back.  We're not taking a $16M cap hit for what CJ is currently and Allen sounds like he may retire.  I don't see Gman restructuring CJ either and pushing guaranteed money into future years.  If I had to bet, I'd bet on neither being here next season.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
