How Would You Feel if The Panthers Drafted Derrick Henry in the 1st?

I think Kevin Dodd is the realistic ideal pick for us if he is somehow still available at the end of the 1st.

As long as it's a player that Gettleman and co. had tagged to go sooner in the 1st, and were happy to see still there at 30, I'll be satisfied that we got good 1st round value. They had KK as a 1st rounder and were dead right there. Let's see that again this year, whether it's 1st round or 2nd.

Rules for drafting.

1.  RBs aren't worth drafting in the first round unless you think you have another Bo Jackson type player.  (That ain't Henry, Henry wasn't even close to Gurley...he had volume Gurley didn't and was used more).

2.  Never ever ever ever ever, I mean never, draft an Alabama RB who Saban overuses in college.  Never.  Don't do it.

3. review rules 1 and 2.

Specifically with Henry, I am an AL fan, and part of me would love this, but history does not look kindly upon AL RBs in the NFL - Saban works them hard and their offense is especially run heavy.  Henry did a mountain of work this year, and those carries and the hits that came with them will cut his shelf life down, I would prefer (and I think DG will follow though on this) we get a big man on one of the lines or take a SS at this spot.  If we are getting a RB from AL, I think it is much more likely we get a back like Kenyan Drake who can catch the ball and is also a ST contributor in maybe rd 3/4.  More globally, I dont think DG takes a RB this high if there are equally talented DEs or SS/CB/OT prospects on the board.

This perception about Alabama backs not being good in the NFL has to stop too.

Yeldon had a very good rookie year.  Ingram has been great the last 2-3 years.  Lacy had a very good first 2 years, weight got out of control last year but was still productive down the stretch.

Evaluate the skill-set, not the school.  Henry has a VERY appealing skill-set.  Not advocating for us to draft him, but not fair for him to get short-changed either.

Well you have to factor in how a school used him.  Alabama has abused certain players.  He won a Heisman off workload volume.

He could be a good NFL RB.  Not a first round type player though

BAD real fuging bad

Let's look at the past Alabama running backs who were all going to dominate the league

Mark Ingram, Trent Richardson lol, Eddie "Cheeseburger" Lacy,

Less notable: Glen Coffee

Yeldon was ALRIGHT his rookie year

Not one of those guys has panned out- WHY? Because Alabama dominates recruiting and always has a beastly O-line.

I would feel that Gettleman knows more and is more comfortable with the pick than I would be.

Bama RBs have produced massively in college since Saban has been at Bama, but have been much less productive professionals.

Additionally, our offense includes LOTS of plays centered around the read-option formation.  Henry didn't play in a read-option offense.  He has no experience in it.

I think it would be a recipe for disaster.  But, if Gettleman chose him, that would likely make me very wrong.

(P.S. Would love for us to pick Bama center Ryan Kelly in the 1st round.)
