Conor Orr showing the Panthers some love (+potential FA bargains)

With free agency set to begin in just a few weeks, we'll all line up to declare winners and losers before the ink is dry on all the new deals. But time and time again, the teams who actually 'win' free agency are the ones looking for fairly-priced, complementary pieces on the open market and not players who will fill a gaping void on offense or defense. Think the Patriots, not the Bills. Think the Broncos and Panthers, not the Dolphins.

So who are these complementary pieces, you ask? Here is a primer on some of the defensive players at each position who will come at a good bargain with a high upside, assuming they are not tagged or re-signed before the market opens. Bargain is a relative term in this context, as some players will inevitably command a higher price tag than others.

On Tuesday, we tackled offense. Now, it's time for the defense.

our significant FA signings the past 2-3 years:

Coleman - a journeyman that no one even had as a lock to make the squad = probowl snub
Orr - everyone was clowning us for putting trust in him during the offseason = redeemed him Blindside name
Ginn - great PR/KR but no one thought he would be a starting WR = shut everyone up, even Rodney Harrison
Harper - everyone thought he could have retired 2 years ago and no one would blame him = locker room leader
Cotchery - ALL didnt even realize he was still in the league until this year = given the best nickname on the team - Clutchery
Finnegan - on the couch one week = saving our defense the next few weeks
Remmers - could've throw in the towel on his career after 3 season with San Diego = turned into a solid starter
Tillman - probably our biggest most lucrative FA signing = 1 yr @ $3 mill deal :)

Mike Mitchell - turned him from a decent player to a top 3 FS in 1 year

All Hail Nippleshorts!!!!!!

    • We don't have to tear down Dak to appreciate what Bryce did yesterday. Dak had 0 running game. If the cowboys were better, he'd be a legit MVP candidate if he keeps playing this way.  They did it with Ceedee last year, but they do a better job of anybody we play consistently of getting their best receiver off Jaycee.  Bryce was good too. If we just catch the ball that was intercepted, we probably win by 7+, and Bryce goes over 200 yards passing.  Biggest shift the last few weeks has been play calling. I thought Canales abandoned the run game way to early at times last year. This year he really seems to be sticking with it.  I still think Chuba is better at making 4 yards when there's nothing there, but Rico is better at making 30 yards when there's 6 there. I like the direction. Hopefully we can get Moton, Sanders and Coker back and really be dangerous. Our play action game is pretty deadly right now.  Unrelated: My favorite quality about Bryce right now is his ability to see the defensive hold and throw the ball there. He EXPOSES the officials when they don't call it. That one on Tetaroia yesterday late in the game was a bad miss on their part.
    • That sacks allowed number lookin juicy!
    • This is a game the Panthers should win... just the sort of game they lose. The Panthers have a bad habit that goes back years of playing down to the competition's level only to mess around and lose the game. The Jets game should be taken very seriously! But I want to enjoy the fact that they beat the Cowboys for at least another day or so!
